Why Rewards for Grinding Backfire, and What to Reward Instead

A mom in my room one October told me her son would do 40 subtraction problems a night at home. Forty. I was impressed for about four seconds, until she added that he raced through them, got maybe half right, and then held out his hand for the dollar she'd promised. He wasn't doing math. He was mining for dollars, and the worksheet was just the shovel.

That's the trap with most rewards for kids doing math. We reward the pile, so the kid makes the pile bigger. Nobody ever said "and it has to be correct, and you have to actually understand it," because that part is hard to see and harder to measure. So the kid optimizes for the thing you can count. Fast. Sloppy. Done.

What the kid is actually learning

When you pay per problem or per page, you're teaching a lesson, just not the one you meant to. You're teaching that math is a chore to get through, that speed beats accuracy, and that the point is the payout at the end. None of that has anything to do with understanding numbers.

I've watched this play out for years. The kids who get rewarded for volume start guessing. They'd rather write down any answer and move on than sit with a hard one for thirty seconds. Why would they? Sitting with it doesn't pay. Finishing does.

There's a well-known bit of research behavior here that lines up with what I see at the kitchen-table level. When you attach a reward to something a kid might have done anyway, the reward can quietly become the whole reason. Take it away and the behavior often drops below where it started. That's the backfire. You spend a dollar a night and end up with a kid who won't touch math without one.

Grinding is not the same as learning

Here's the distinction I wish more parents drew a hard line around. Repetition has a place. A kid does need to practice, and some of that practice is boring. But grinding through 40 problems on autopilot is not practice in any useful sense. It's just motion.

Real practice looks different. It's a kid working eight problems and getting stuck on the fifth one, and staying stuck for a minute, and then figuring out that 43 minus 27 is easier if you think of it as "27 up to 43." That struggle is the whole thing. That's where the learning lives. And it's slow, and it doesn't produce an impressive pile, which is exactly why the pile-based reward system misses it every time.

I had a third grader named Priya who was slow. Painfully slow on her math facts, and her parents were worried. But when I actually watched her work, she wasn't guessing. She was checking. She'd solve 6 times 7 and then quietly confirm it against 6 times 6 plus 6. She understood what multiplication was. The fast kids next to her often didn't. By spring she'd caught up on speed too, because the understanding was already there. Speed follows understanding. It almost never works the other way.

Reward the progress, not the pile

So what do you actually reward? The short version: reward the things that mean the kid got better, not the things that mean the kid was busy.

Here are the ones that hold up over time:

  • Sticking with a hard problem instead of bailing. Effort on the tough one, not the count of easy ones.
  • Getting something they couldn't do last week. A new fact family, borrowing across a zero, whatever the edge of their ability is right now.
  • Catching and fixing their own mistake. This one is gold. A kid who says "wait, that's wrong" and redoes it is doing the exact thing good math students do forever.
  • Explaining how they got the answer. If they can teach it back to you, they own it. If they can't, the answer was luck.

Notice that none of these can be faked by going faster. You can't rush your way into understanding a concept, and you can't rush your way into a good explanation. That's the point. A good reward is one that only pays out when the real thing happens.

Make the reward fit the size of the win

The other mistake I see is rewards that are all the same size no matter what. A sticker for showing up, a sticker for a genuine breakthrough, same sticker. Kids notice. If the payout is flat, they'll do the flattest possible work to earn it.

Tie the reward to the difficulty. A problem type your kid already owns should barely register. The one that made them sweat should count for a lot. This is roughly how the app my husband and I built for our own kids handles it, more credit for the harder skill, less for the stuff they've already got down, so there's no upside to grinding easy problems for volume. But you don't need an app for the idea. You can do it with a jar of marbles and a rule that the hard stuff is worth three and the easy stuff is worth one.

And go light on cash. Money makes the transaction feel like a transaction, and once it's a transaction, the kid starts negotiating. Time with you tends to work better anyway. "Finish this and I'll play a game with you" beats a dollar most nights, because the thing they actually want is usually you.

When to pull the reward back

Rewards are training wheels. The goal is a kid who does math because getting good at something feels good, not because a marble is waiting. So once a skill clicks, stop paying for it. If your kid has genuinely mastered their sixes, don't keep rewarding sixes. Move the reward to the sevens, or to something new. Keep the payout parked at the edge of what's hard for them.

This does two things. It stops the reward from becoming the point, and it keeps the target moving toward the next real challenge. The kid learns that the good feeling comes from getting better, and the marble was just there to get them to notice.

The mom with the 40 subtraction problems went home and changed one rule. Ten problems, and the dollar only came if he could walk her through two of them out loud. He grumbled the first week. By the third week he was doing fewer problems and actually getting them, and she told me the held-out hand had stopped appearing. He wasn't mining anymore. He was learning, and that turned out to be cheaper too.
