How to Motivate a Kid Who Says I Hate Math Without Making It Worse

A boy in my class named Marcus once slid down in his chair, folded his arms, and announced to the whole room, "I hate math." He was seven. He said it the way you'd say you hate broccoli, like it was just a fact about the world. And here's the thing I've learned in sixteen years of teaching: the worst move I could have made right then was to tell him he didn't really mean it.

Figuring out how to motivate a child who hates math starts with believing them. Not the "I hate math" part, but the feeling underneath it. When a kid says that, they're almost never talking about numbers. They're talking about how math makes them feel: dumb, slow, exposed in front of other people. Fix that feeling and the hate usually goes with it. Ignore it and you can pile on all the star charts and screen-time bribes you want. Nothing moves.

What the words actually mean

"I hate math" is a translation. Underneath, it's usually one of these:

  • I don't understand this and I'm embarrassed to ask again.
  • I always get these wrong so why bother trying.
  • The pace is too fast and I've been lost since Tuesday.
  • Math is the thing everyone praises my sister for, not me.

Marcus wasn't lazy. He'd missed a chunk of school with an ear infection right when the class learned that subtraction sometimes means borrowing from the tens column. He came back, saw everyone else fly through it, and quietly decided he was the dumb one. The "hate" was armor. It's easier to say you hate something than to admit you're scared of looking stupid at it.

So before you try to motivate anything, get curious about the specific wall. Sit next to your kid, not across from them, and watch them do three or four problems out loud. You're not correcting. You're listening for where the confidence drops. Nine times out of ten there's one particular skill, one small crack, and everything above it feels shaky because the floor underneath is soft.

Stop trying to make them love it

Parents tell me all the time, "I just want her to enjoy math." I get it. But that's a heavy thing to hang on a nine-year-old, and honestly it's not the goal. I don't love filing my taxes. I do them anyway because I'm capable of them, and being capable feels a lot better than being helpless.

Aim for capable. Enjoyment sometimes shows up later as a bonus, but competence is the thing that actually changes how a kid sits in their chair. A child who has quietly gotten good at something stops needing to hate it out loud. The bragging and the eye-rolling both fade because neither one is protecting anything anymore.

This is why I'm skeptical of the "make it fun" advice when fun means twenty rounds of the same speed drill dressed up with a cartoon. If a kid doesn't understand borrowing, doing it faster with sound effects just means failing faster with sound effects. The fun has to sit on top of real understanding, not stand in for it.

Shrink the problem until it's winnable

Here's the move that worked with Marcus, and it works with almost every kid. Make the next step so small that success is nearly guaranteed, then let them feel it.

I pulled him back to two-digit subtraction with no borrowing at all. Easy stuff. He rolled his eyes because it was "baby math," and I let him. He got ten in a row right. Then I slid in one problem that needed borrowing, and I walked him through it slowly with actual counters, ten little cubes standing in for a ten so he could physically break it apart. He did it. Then two more. By Friday he wasn't excited about subtraction, but he'd stopped saying he hated it, which was the whole point.

A few things that make this work at home:

  • Pick a starting point that's clearly too easy. You want early wins, not a fair fight.
  • Add difficulty one small notch at a time. If they stumble, drop back a notch, no drama.
  • Use something they can touch. Coins, dried beans, LEGO bricks. Abstract numbers on a page are where a lot of kids get lost.
  • Keep sessions short. Ten focused minutes beats forty minutes of a kid mentally checked out.

The point of shrinking the problem isn't to baby them. It's to rebuild the belief that they can, one honest success at a time. Confidence isn't a pep talk. It's evidence, and you're helping them collect it.

Praise the effort you can actually see

"You're so smart" feels kind, but it backfires. If a kid thinks they succeeded because they're smart, then the first hard problem tells them the opposite. Smart kids should find things easy, so struggle must mean they're not smart, so why keep going.

Instead I praise the thing they did, not the thing they are. "You didn't quit when that one got tricky." "You caught your own mistake on the tens column, that's exactly what good math thinkers do." It's specific, it's true, and it points them at a behavior they can repeat. My own kids hear this from me constantly, sometimes to the point of groaning, but I'd rather over-do honest, specific praise than hand out empty "good job" a hundred times a day.

And go easy on speed. So many kids equate slow with dumb. I tell mine that some of the sharpest mathematicians I know are slow and careful. Getting it right matters more than getting it fast, and a kid who feels the clock breathing down their neck rarely does their best thinking.

Where rewards help, and where they backfire

I'm not against rewards. My husband and I built a little math app for our own kids partly because a well-placed reward can turn a groan into a "fine, one more." But the reward has to be tied to real progress, not to sheer volume. If a kid learns that thirty sloppy problems earns the same prize as ten careful ones, you've just taught them to grind. That's the opposite of what you want.

So reward the mastery, not the mileage. Celebrate when they finally nail the skill that used to trip them up, not when they've simply filled a page. A reward that follows genuine understanding tells a kid their effort meant something. A reward that follows mindless repetition just tells them to keep the assembly line running.

The slow part nobody advertises

Motivating a kid who hates math is rarely a single good afternoon. It's a lot of small, patient days where you resist the urge to lecture and just help them get a little more capable than they were yesterday. Some days go backward. That's normal. The armor doesn't come off all at once.

Marcus is in middle school now. His mom emailed me last year to say he'd joined the math club. Not because he suddenly loves it. Because somewhere along the way he stopped believing he was the dumb one, and a kid who believes he can figure things out will walk toward the hard stuff instead of away from it. That's the whole game. You're not selling them on math. You're helping them stop being afraid of it.
