The Multiplication Chart Is a Learning Tool, Not a Crutch, If You Use It Right
The chart on the fridge
There's a laminated multiplication chart on my refrigerator right now, held up by a magnet shaped like a taco. My students used to gasp when they came over for tutoring and saw it. "You're a teacher and you have a cheat sheet?" Yes. Because a chart isn't a cheat sheet. It's a map. And nobody thinks less of a hiker for carrying a map.
The worry I hear most from parents is that letting a kid look at a chart will keep them from ever memorizing the facts. It's a fair worry. It's also mostly wrong, as long as you know how to use a multiplication chart on purpose instead of just handing it over and walking away.
The chart is a tool. Like any tool, it can build something or it can let a kid avoid building anything. The difference is entirely in how you use it.
What the chart is actually for
A multiplication chart's real job isn't to give answers. It's to show patterns. Once your kid sees the patterns, the facts start to stick on their own, because the human brain holds onto patterns far better than it holds onto 144 random unrelated facts.
Sit down with your kid and the chart and go hunting. Not for answers. For weirdness. Ask things like:
- Why does the whole nines column look like it's tipping over? (The tens digit climbs, the ones digit falls. 9, 18, 27, 36. The two digits always add up to nine.)
- What's the same about 6 times 4 and 4 times 6? (They land on the exact same number. Half the chart is a mirror of the other half.)
- Why are all the fives so easy to spot? (Every answer ends in 0 or 5.)
- What happens along the diagonal? (Those are the square numbers: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25.)
A kid who notices that the chart folds in half along the diagonal has just cut the number of facts to memorize roughly in half, and they figured it out themselves. That sticks. Way more than me telling them "multiplication is commutative" ever would.
The crutch version, and how to spot it
Here's when a chart turns into a crutch. Your kid hits 7 times 8, glances at the chart, copies 56, and moves on without a single thought passing through their head. Do that a hundred times and they've practiced looking things up. They have not practiced multiplying.
You can catch this. Watch their eyes. A kid using the chart to learn scans, thinks, and often looks away and mutters the fact to themselves before they check. A kid using it as a crutch does a quick copy, like taking dictation.
The fix is not to yank the chart away. It's to add a beat of thinking before the look. Try this:
- "Guess first, then check." They say a number, any number, then look. Guessing makes the brain reach, and reaching is where learning happens.
- "Cover it and try." Once a row feels familiar, put a sticky note over that row and see if they can do it from memory. Uncover to check.
- "Which ones are your freebies?" Have them mark the facts they already know cold. Most kids are surprised how many that is. It shrinks the scary pile.
The fading plan
The goal is to need the chart less over time, not to never touch it. You do that on purpose, in stages, not by cutting it off cold one Tuesday.
Start with the whole chart available. Then fold it so only the rows they're still shaky on show. Then switch to a chart with some answers blanked out, so they fill the gaps. Then flashcards for the last stubborn facts, which for most kids are the sevens, the eights, and that one specific problem that just won't stick. For a lot of my students it was 6 times 7. No idea why. It's always 6 times 7.
This slow fade matters. A kid who's been weaned off the chart step by step keeps their confidence. A kid who has it snatched away the day before a timed test just panics, and panic erases facts they actually knew.
Fluency isn't the same as speed
One warning, because the timed-test culture pushes parents the wrong direction. Multiplication fluency means knowing the facts well and being able to use them, not answering in under three seconds while a clock ticks.
I've watched plenty of kids who "know" their facts freeze the second a timer starts. That's not a math problem. That's a stress problem, and drilling harder makes it worse. Speed comes on its own once the knowledge is solid and the fear is gone. Chase the understanding, and reasonable speed shows up as a side effect. Chase speed first and you often get a kid who's fast, anxious, and shaky the moment a problem looks unfamiliar.
If you're using an app to build these facts, look for one that rewards a kid for actually learning a fact rather than just for churning through repetitions. Mindless grinding builds fast look-up habits, not real recall. The chart, used the way I've described, is the opposite of grinding. It makes the kid think about why the answer is what it is.
The honest bottom line
A multiplication chart won't ruin your kid. Left face-down while they mindlessly copy, it does nothing. Turned into a pattern-hunting map with a parent asking good questions, it's one of the better tools you've got.
So keep the chart. Put it on the fridge. Just don't treat it like a vending machine that spits out answers. Treat it like a map you're both reading together, until the day your kid folds it up and says they don't really need it anymore. That day comes faster than you'd think.
