The 20-Minute Rule: When to Stop Fighting a Math Homework Problem
Last October a mom emailed me at 9:40 on a Tuesday night. Her second grader had been crying over a single subtraction problem for over an hour. She wanted to know if she was allowed to just tell him the answer. I wrote back and said yes, put the pencil down, and I'll deal with it tomorrow.
I've been teaching elementary school for sixteen years, and the question I get most from parents isn't about fractions or borrowing. It's this: how long should math homework take before I'm allowed to stop? Nobody tells you the number, so you sit there at the kitchen table watching the clock and feeling like quitting means you failed.
Here's the number. Twenty minutes.
Where the twenty comes from
There's an old guideline a lot of schools use called the "ten minutes per grade" rule. First grade gets about ten minutes of homework a night, second grade twenty, third grade thirty, and so on across all subjects combined. It's not a law. It's a rough ceiling that keeps homework from swallowing the whole evening.
But most parents are dealing with one subject at a time, and math is usually the one that stalls. So the way I explain it to families is simpler. Take your child's grade, multiply by ten, and that's roughly the total. When math alone starts hogging most of that and your kid is stuck, you're done for the night. For a lot of younger kids that lands right around the twenty-minute mark on any single sticking point.
The point isn't the exact figure. The point is that there's a limit, and you're allowed to hit it.
What actually happens after minute twenty
I've watched this play out in my classroom hundreds of times, and it's the same at home. A kid who's been fighting a problem for twenty minutes has stopped learning. Their working memory is full of frustration, not numbers. Whatever you drill into them past that point doesn't stick, and worse, they start to believe the story that they're "bad at math."
That story is the real damage. A wrong answer on a worksheet is nothing. A seven-year-old who decides math is the subject that makes them cry, that follows them for years. I've had fifth graders freeze up on problems they absolutely could do, because somewhere back in second grade math became the thing they lose at.
So when I say stop, I'm not being soft. I'm protecting the thing that matters more than tonight's worksheet.
How to stop without giving up
Stopping isn't the same as quitting. There's a difference between "we're done learning tonight" and "we're done trying forever." Here's what I tell parents to actually say and do:
- Name the time out loud. "We've been at this twenty minutes, so we're going to stop and come back to it." Kids relax when there's an end.
- Write a note to the teacher on the page. Something short like "we tried this for 20 min and got stuck." I promise you, we want to see that. It tells me exactly where the gap is.
- Do one problem together, slowly, if there's any gas left in the tank. Not the hard one. An easy one, so they end on a win instead of a loss.
- Skip the rest without shame. A blank problem with a note is more useful to me than a page of answers your kid didn't understand.
That note is the part parents skip, and it's the most valuable thing you can do. When a kid turns in a page with "stuck on #4, tried hard" written on it, I know to pull them aside. When they turn in wrong answers they cried through, I just see wrong answers.
The problem with grinding
There's a belief floating around that if a kid just does more problems, understanding will eventually show up. Sometimes it does. Often it doesn't. Grinding a confused kid through twenty more subtraction problems mostly teaches them to guess faster and hate the pencil harder.
Real math understanding comes from the moment something clicks, not from repetition on top of confusion. If your kid doesn't get why you borrow from the tens place, doing thirty borrowing problems won't build the "why." It just builds twenty minutes of practicing the wrong thing.
This is the whole reason my husband and I built our little math app, Math Prizes, the way we did. Rewards are tied to actually getting it, not to sheer volume, because a kid grinding out busywork for a prize learns to game the busywork, not the math. When the reward is for real progress, the practice starts pointing at understanding instead of just minutes logged.
If your child is stuck because they don't understand the concept, more of the same problem is the last thing they need. A short break, a good night's sleep, and a fresh look tomorrow will do more than another hour tonight ever could.
What to do the next day
Stopping at twenty minutes only works if you actually come back. The morning is usually better than the night. Kids are less fried, and so are you. Spend five minutes at breakfast on the one problem that stumped them, and half the time it just falls open. Sleep does something to a stuck brain that grinding never will.
If the same kind of problem stumps them three nights in a row, that's your signal to talk to the teacher, not to add more homework time. Three nights of the same wall means there's a concept missing, and no amount of kitchen-table minutes will fill a hole the teacher needs to patch. Send the email. We would much rather hear from you in week two than in a parent conference in March.
And keep the number in your back pocket. When the clock hits twenty and the tears start, you're not giving up on your kid. You're making a smart call that the math will still be there tomorrow, and that tonight it's more important your child goes to bed believing they're the kind of person who can learn it.
That mom with the second grader wrote me back a few weeks later. He'd figured out subtraction. Not that Tuesday night, and not from that worksheet. Just eventually, once the crying stopped being part of it.
