How to Read a Homework Sheet's Directions With Your Kid
A fourth grader once handed me a math sheet where every single answer was wrong, and she was near tears because she thought she was bad at math. She wasn't. The directions said "round each number to the nearest ten, then add." She'd added first and rounded last. Every computation she did was correct. She just did the wrong thing correctly, twenty times in a row. That's the moment I started teaching parents how to help kids follow homework directions before a pencil ever touches the page.
Most homework struggles I see are not about the math. They're about reading the instructions, and a shocking amount of frustration disappears once a kid learns to slow down for that one step. It takes thirty seconds and it saves the whole assignment.
Read the directions out loud before starting
The single best habit is embarrassingly simple. Before your kid does anything, have them read the directions out loud, all the way through, then say back what the sheet is asking in their own words. Not read again. Say it in kid language.
You'll catch problems immediately. A child who reads "circle the greater number" out loud and then tells you "so I add them" has told you exactly where the assignment was about to go sideways. Better to find that out now than after a full page of wrong work.
I have kids look for three things when they read directions:
- The action word. Circle, add, round, estimate, compare, solve, explain. What is the sheet actually telling you to do?
- The order. "First do this, then that." A lot of math directions have two steps and kids only see the first one.
- The words that change everything. All, each, both, not, except, only. These tiny words flip the meaning and get skipped constantly.
Teach the trap words
Some words on a math sheet trip kids up over and over, and once you name them, your child starts spotting them. I call them trap words because they hide in plain sight.
"Each" is the biggest one. "How much does each cost" is a completely different question from "how much do they cost," and a kid racing through will answer the wrong one. "Not" is another. A problem that asks which number is "not even" gets missed by kids who saw "even" and stopped reading.
Then there are the sneaky math words that look ordinary. "Difference" means subtract, not "how are these different." "Product" means multiply, not "the thing you made." "Sum" and "total" mean add. A third grader who reads "find the difference between 40 and 15" and writes an essay about how they're different is not confused about subtraction. They're confused about a word, and that's fixable in one conversation.
Break a word problem into pieces
Word problems are where directions and math tangle together, and they cause the most tears at the kitchen table. The fix is to separate reading the problem from solving it, so your kid does one job at a time.
Here's the order I teach:
- Read it twice. Once fast to get the story, once slow to get the numbers.
- Say what's happening. "There were some apples, some got eaten, they want to know how many are left." Story first, numbers second.
- Underline the actual question. Kids answer the wrong question all the time because they never located the real one. Find the question mark. Underline that whole sentence.
- Circle the numbers and what they count. Not just "12" but "12 apples." The label keeps them from mixing up the apples and the baskets.
- Then, and only then, do the math.
When my own students do these steps, the number of "I don't get it" hands goes way down, because most of them did get it. They just needed to take the problem apart before trying to solve the whole thing at once.
Let them find their own mistakes
Once your kid finishes, resist grabbing the sheet and pointing at the wrong ones. Instead, if you see errors, say "go back and reread the directions on this row, then check your answer." Nine times out of ten they'll spot it themselves, and the mistake teaches more when they catch it than when you do.
This does something quiet and important. It moves the job of checking directions from you onto them, which is the whole point. You won't be sitting next to them on the test. A kid who has learned to reread the instructions when something feels off has a skill that outlasts any single worksheet.
Keep the tone light
None of this works if it feels like an interrogation. If reading the directions becomes another chore with a stern parent hovering, kids will rush it just to escape. Make it fast and matter-of-fact. "What's this one asking?" Kid answers. "Great, go." Thirty seconds.
The girl who rounded and added in the wrong order came back the next week, read her directions out loud before starting, and got the whole sheet right. Nothing about her math had changed in seven days. She'd just learned to read the instructions first, and that turned out to be most of the battle. Do this for a few weeks and you'll stop seeing pages of correct math aimed at the wrong question, which is the most frustrating kind of wrong answer there is.
