How to Set Up a Kid's Device So a Math App Can't Wander Off
Ten minutes of math, three seconds to escape
You hand your kid the tablet, open the math app, and walk to the kitchen. By the time you're back with a snack, they're watching cartoons. They didn't do anything sneaky. They tapped the home button, saw the video app sitting right there, and their brain did what a seven year old brain does. The math app didn't fail. The device just let them leave it.
There's a fix built into almost every tablet and phone, and it's the single most useful setting most parents have never turned on. You can lock a kids device to one app, so the home button, the app switcher, and the way out are all disabled until you enter a passcode. The math session stays put. Every major platform has its own name for this, and once you know where it lives, it takes about a minute to arm.
Apple: Guided Access
On an iPhone or iPad, the feature is called Guided Access. It pins the device to whatever app is currently open and blocks every exit until you type the code.
Set it up once:
- Open Settings, then Accessibility, then Guided Access, and turn it on
- Tap Passcode Settings and set a code that is not your device unlock code
- Turn on the accessibility shortcut so a triple-click of the side button starts it
To use it, open the math app, triple-click the side button (or the home button on older models), and tap Start. The kid is now locked in. When they're done, triple-click again and enter your code to release it. You can even gray out parts of the screen if there's an in-app button you don't want tapped, which is handy for apps with a store corner.
One heads-up: set the passcode to something you'll remember but they won't watch you type. Kids are quietly excellent at memorizing the code you enter in front of them a few times.
Android: App Pinning
Android calls it App Pinning, or Screen Pinning on some phones. Same idea, slightly different path depending on the maker (Samsung, Google, and others move the menus around).
Turn it on:
- Open Settings and search for "pinning" (fastest way past the menu differences)
- Turn on App Pinning
- Turn on "Ask for PIN before unpinning" so it can't be undone with a swipe
To pin, open the app switcher, find the math app's card, tap its icon at the top, and choose Pin. To leave, hold the back and overview buttons together and enter your PIN. That last part matters. Without the "ask for PIN" option checked, a kid can unpin with a two-button hold on their own, and then the whole thing is decorative.
Amazon Fire: the built-in kid tools
Fire tablets are everywhere in the under-ten crowd because they're cheap, and Amazon leans into that with a fuller set of built-in kid controls. There isn't a one-app pin exactly like Apple's, but Amazon Kids (the profile system) gets you close and then some.
Set up a child profile, add only the apps you want available, and the kid lives inside a walled version of the tablet that can't reach the rest of the device or your account. Inside that, you can set app time limits and lock the whole thing behind your parent passcode. For a single-app math session, a child profile with just the one app added does the job, and it survives a curious kid better than a pin they might figure out.
If you went with a Fire mostly for a math app, the child profile is worth the fifteen minutes to set up properly. It's the difference between handing over a locked-down learning device and handing over a full tablet with a flimsy fence around it.
What locking down does and doesn't fix
Pinning solves one specific problem well: it stops the mid-session drift to another app. That's the big one, and it's worth doing. But it's not a full parenting system, and it helps to be clear-eyed about the edges.
- It doesn't stop distraction inside the app. If the math app itself is full of shiny detours and a store button, pinning just traps the kid in there with them. Pick a well-behaved app first.
- It doesn't replace time limits. A kid can grind an unproductive session inside a pinned app just as easily as a good one. Locking the door doesn't decide what happens in the room.
- It's not tamper-proof against a determined older kid. It's built for young kids and honest situations, not for outsmarting a motivated twelve year old. Match the tool to the age.
The point of pinning is to remove the easiest, laziest exit, the one a young kid takes without even really deciding to. That covers the most common case by a wide margin. A five or seven year old isn't plotting an escape. They just see the home button and drift, and pinning takes that button away.
Set it once, use it every day
The reason to bother is that this is a one-time setup with a daily payoff. Spend a few minutes turning on Guided Access or App Pinning or a Fire child profile now, learn the two-second gesture to start and stop it, and from then on math time is math time. You hand over the tablet, it's locked to the one thing, and you can walk to the kitchen without coming back to cartoons. It's a small setting that quietly removes a recurring argument, which is about the best a device setting can do.
