How to Try a Math App With Your Kid Instead of At Them
The first time I gave my daughter a math app, I did it the lazy way. I downloaded it, tapped through the setup, handed her the tablet, and went to load the dishwasher. Twenty minutes later she had earned four hundred coins and could not tell me what seven plus eight was. She had figured out that if she tapped fast enough and guessed, the app would eventually hand her the answer and let her keep going. She wasn't learning math. She was learning the app.
That is the whole problem with how most people start. Trying a math app with your child, sitting next to them for the first stretch, is a completely different thing than trying one at them. One builds something. The other is a very colorful babysitter.
Sit for the first ten minutes
You don't need to sit there forever. You need to sit for the setup and the first few problems, because that is where you learn whether the app is doing anything real.
Watch what happens when your kid gets one wrong. That single moment tells you more than any App Store description. Good apps slow down. They show the wrong answer, walk through why, and give a slightly easier version next. Bad apps flash a red X, subtract a few points, and shove the next problem in your kid's face like nothing happened.
I built a kids math app for my own children, so I have opinions about this, but you don't need to trust me. Just look at the screen when your kid misses one. If the app treats a wrong answer as a teaching moment, keep it. If it treats a wrong answer as a punishment, delete it.
Turn the guessing off in your head first
Kids are smart in ways that will ruin your afternoon. They will find the shortcut. If tapping randomly on a four-option multiple choice question gets them to the reward eventually, they will tap randomly, because the reward is the point and the math is the obstacle.
So during those first ten minutes, do one thing. Ask your kid to say the answer out loud before they tap. Not every time. Just enough that you can hear whether there's a real answer in their head or whether they're pattern-matching the buttons.
Here is what that sounds like at my kitchen table:
- "Okay, six times four. What do you think before you touch it?"
- "Twenty four."
- "How'd you get there?"
- "Six, twelve, eighteen, twenty four." (counting up by sixes on her fingers)
That last part is the whole game. She's not memorized on sixes yet, but she has a method, and the method is correct. That is a kid who's actually working. Compare that to "I don't know, I'll just try one," which is a kid who's gaming a machine.
What a good session actually looks like
A useful practice session is short and a little boring in the good way. Ten to fifteen minutes. Some problems land instantly. A few make your kid pause and think. One or two are genuinely hard and get worked through slowly.
If every problem is instant, the app is too easy and it's just handing out rewards for stuff your kid already owns. If every problem is a struggle, it's too hard and your kid is going to quit and decide math is the enemy. You want mostly-known with a thin edge of new. That edge is where learning happens, and a decent app should find it on its own by adjusting difficulty as it goes.
The rewards should be tied to that edge, too. A ticket or a coin should mean "you did something that took real effort," not "you sat here for eight minutes and mashed buttons." When the reward is glued to real progress instead of time served, kids stop trying to farm it and start trying to earn it. That distinction sounds small. It is the entire difference between an app that teaches and an app that occupies.
Ask one question when they stop
When the session ends, don't just say "good job" and take the tablet back. Ask one specific thing. Not "did you have fun," because the answer is always yes and it tells you nothing.
Ask "what was the hardest one?" A kid who was actually working can answer this. They'll say "the nine times ones" or "when it had the borrowing." A kid who was gaming the app will shrug, because nothing was hard, because they weren't trying. That shrug is your signal that the next session needs you sitting closer.
You can also flip it. "Teach me the trick you used." If your kid can explain a method back to you, even a clumsy one, they own it. If they can't explain anything, they were guessing, and no amount of coins fixes that.
Let go slowly, not all at once
The goal is absolutely for your kid to practice on their own eventually. You're not signing up to supervise every session for the rest of the school year. But you earn that hands-off time by front-loading attention now.
I gave my daughter three or four supervised sessions before I let her fly solo. By the fourth one, she was saying answers out loud without me asking, because that had become the routine. When I finally handed her the tablet and walked off to the dishwasher again, she wasn't farming coins anymore. She was doing math and the coins were just keeping score.
That is trying a math app with your child instead of at them. It costs you about forty minutes total, spread across a few days, and it's the difference between a tool that helps and a screen that just keeps the room quiet.
