The Hardware Question: Tablet, Phone, or Laptop for Home Math Practice

A parent emailed me last month asking whether she should buy an iPad specifically so her son could do math practice, or whether the old family laptop was fine. It's a fair question, and the honest answer surprised her: the best device for kids math practice is usually the one you already own, and the differences between them matter less than how the device is set up and how long a kid sits with it. But there are real trade-offs, and if you're about to spend money, you should know what each option actually gives you.

I write software that runs on all three, so I've watched real children use all three. Here's what holds up.

The tablet: best for young hands, worst for wandering

For kids under about eight, a tablet wins on feel. There's no mouse to fight, no trackpad to learn. A five-year-old can drag ten apples into a basket with a finger, and that direct-touch interaction matches how young kids think. The screen is big enough to read and small enough to hold.

The catch is that a tablet is also the easiest device to get lost inside. It's built for browsing, so a child who finishes math is one swipe away from a video app. This is fixable. Both iPads and Android tablets can lock to a single app (Guided Access on iPad), which turns a wandering machine into a focused one. But you have to actually turn that on. Out of the box, a tablet is a temptation with a math app somewhere in the corner.

Tablets are also the most common device for tap-heavy, animated math apps, which is a plus for engagement and a minus if the app leans on flashy motion instead of real thinking. The hardware is fine. Just watch what you install on it.

The phone: fine in a pinch, cramped for real work

I'll be blunt. A phone is the worst of the three for sustained math practice, and it's also the one families reach for most, because it's always in a pocket.

The screen is the problem. Numbers get tiny, keypads get cramped, and a kid tracing a long division problem on a four-inch screen is fighting the hardware the whole time. For a quick flashcard drill while you're waiting at the doctor's office, sure, a phone is genuinely handy. For daily practice at home, it's a compromise you don't need to make.

There's also a focus issue that's specific to phones: it's your phone. When your kid is holding it, they're holding notifications, messages, and every other pull that thing carries. If a phone is your only option, that's completely workable, but treat it as the backup, not the plan.

The laptop: best for older kids and real typing

Somewhere around fourth grade, the laptop starts to make sense. Older kids do longer problems, they benefit from a real keyboard, and a laptop naturally signals "this is work time" in a way a tablet never quite does. A child sitting at a desk with a laptop is in a different mode than a child sprawled on the couch with a tablet, and that mode helps.

Laptops handle the browser-based math programs that schools often assign, and they're the right tool once a kid is doing anything that involves typing out reasoning or working with a spreadsheet-style layout. The downside is portability and touch. A young child mousing around a laptop is slower and more frustrated than the same kid tapping a tablet.

If you've got a mix of ages, this is the split I'd suggest:

  • Preschool through second grade: tablet, locked to one app
  • Third grade: either, depending on the kid and the app
  • Fourth grade and up: laptop for anything substantial, tablet for quick drills

What actually matters more than the device

Here's the part hardware companies won't tell you. The device barely moves the needle compared to two other things: how long your kid uses it, and what's running on it.

A great math app on a five-year-old laptop beats a mediocre one on the newest tablet, every time. And ten focused minutes on any device beats an hour of half-attention on the fanciest one. The math doesn't care about the processor. It cares about whether your kid is thinking or just tapping.

So before you spend a dime on new hardware, look hard at the software. Does the app reward real progress or just time spent poking the screen? Does it stop at a natural point or run forever? Does it explain a wrong answer or just buzz and move on? Those questions decide whether the practice works. The device underneath is mostly a delivery truck.

The honest recommendation

If you own a tablet, use the tablet, and lock it down. If you own a laptop and your kid is older, use the laptop. If all you've got is a phone, use the phone for short drills and don't feel bad about it.

Do not buy a new device on the theory that it'll make your child better at math. It won't. The kids who improve are the ones who show up regularly, work on real understanding, and get feedback that means something. That happens on hand-me-down hardware just as well as on the shiny stuff, and your wallet will thank you for figuring that out before the checkout page, not after.
