Free Math Websites That Are Actually Good, and How to Judge One

I build a kids math app for a living, which means I've spent an embarrassing number of hours poking at other people's math sites to see how they're built. Most of them are free. A few are genuinely good. The gap between those two facts is what this post is about, because "free" tells you nothing about whether a site will actually teach your kid anything.

Here's the uncomfortable part. A lot of free math websites for kids make money from ads or from getting you to upgrade, and both of those goals pull the design away from teaching. An ad-funded site wants time on page. An upsell-funded site wants your kid to hit a wall so you'll pay to remove it. Neither one is evil, exactly, but neither one is aligned with your kid learning fractions. Once you can see the incentive, you can judge any site in about five minutes.

What a good free math site actually does

Strip away the graphics and a good practice site does a small number of things well. It gives your kid problems at roughly the right difficulty. It tells them fast whether they were right. And when they're wrong, it shows them why, not just a red X and a new problem.

That last one is rarer than it should be. I've tested sites that get everything else right and then, on a wrong answer, just move on. The kid never finds out what happened. They walk away having practiced their mistake. A site that shows the worked step, or even just asks the kid to try that one again, is doing something the flashy ones skip.

Here's a quick sketch of good versus not, based on what I actually see under the hood:

  • Good: wrong answers get an explanation or a second try. Not: wrong answers just advance.
  • Good: difficulty adjusts to the kid. Not: everyone gets the same fixed set forever.
  • Good: rewards come from finishing real work. Not: rewards come from time spent or ads watched.
  • Good: you can see what your kid did. Not: the progress screen is decoration.

The five-minute test you can run yourself

You don't need to trust a review. Sit down with the site for five minutes and do this.

First, get a problem wrong on purpose. Type in something obviously off, like answering 12 for 4 plus 3. Watch what happens. Does the site explain, let you retry, or just shrug and move on? This single test sorts more sites than anything else. The ones that teach care about the wrong answer. The ones that don't, don't.

Second, get several right in a row and see if the problems get harder. A good site notices your kid is cruising and pushes. A weak one serves the same difficulty until the heat death of the universe, which is boring for a strong kid and quietly tells a struggling one nothing about where they actually are.

Third, count the ads and the interruptions. Open the site and just look. If there's a video ad before your kid can answer a single question, or a popup every third problem, that site's real product is attention, and your kid is what's being sold. I'm not precious about all ads. I am precious about a math site that interrupts the math.

The reward trap, from someone who builds rewards

I'll be honest about my own corner of this, because it's the part parents get fooled by most. Points, coins, badges, streaks. Kids love them, and a well-made site uses them to keep a kid coming back. That can be great. It can also be a con.

The question to ask is what the reward is tied to. If your kid earns coins for getting problems right and mastering something new, the reward is pointing at learning. If your kid earns coins for logging in, watching an ad, or clicking around, the reward is pointing at engagement, and engagement is not the same as learning. I've seen sites hand out a shower of coins for basically nothing, and the kid gets the exact same buzz they'd get from real work. That trains them to chase the buzz. When the real work shows up, it feels like a worse deal.

You can spot this fast. Do nothing useful for two minutes and see if the site still congratulates you. If it does, the rewards are theater.

A few that hold up

I'm not going to hand you a ranked list that'll be stale in a year, but some categories reliably deliver. Sites run by universities or nonprofits tend to teach honestly because they aren't selling your kid's attention. Khan Academy is the obvious one, free and genuinely built to explain. Public library sites often bundle solid free practice tools you already pay for with your taxes. And a handful of small independent apps, the ones built by people who clearly have kids of their own, punch above their weight. Math Prizes is one I know well because I built it, but the same honest smell test applies to it as to anything else. Run the five-minute test on it too.

The point isn't the specific names. It's that "made by people not trying to sell your kid's attention" is a better filter than "free" or "popular" or "has a lot of stars."

What free is worth

Free math practice is one of the genuine gifts of the internet. My own kids use free sites all the time, and I'm glad they exist. But free changes how a site gets paid, and how a site gets paid changes what it's built to do. Keep that in the back of your head and you'll stop being surprised when a slick, popular, totally free site turns out to teach almost nothing.

Do the wrong-answer test. Watch the difficulty. Count the interruptions. Check what the rewards are actually for. Five minutes, and you'll know more about a math site than a page of reviews will tell you. Your kid's time is the thing you're spending here, and it's worth more than the sticker price of the site suggests.
