Your Child Knows Facts One Day and Forgets Them the Next: Here's Why
The Thursday problem
On Tuesday, Maya rattled off her sixes without a pause. Six times seven, forty-two, no hesitation. Her mom texted me a little proud. Then Thursday came, I put the same card in front of her, and she stared at it like she'd never seen a six in her life. Her mom was worried something was wrong.
Nothing was wrong. This is one of the most common things I hear from parents, and if your child forgets math facts they seemed to own two days ago, I want to tell you the same thing I told Maya's mom. This is not a sign your kid is bad at math. It's a sign of how human memory is built, and once you understand the mechanism, you can work with it instead of against it.
Knowing it once is not the same as knowing it
When your child gets a fact right on Tuesday, something real happened. A connection formed in the brain. But a fresh connection is fragile, like a footpath worn into grass after one walk. Come back in two days and the grass has mostly sprung back up. The path is faint. She can find it if she slows down, but it's no longer automatic.
Teachers have a name for the difference. There's recognition, where the answer feels familiar when you see it, and there's retrieval, where you can pull the answer out of nowhere on demand. Kids fool everyone, including themselves, because recognition feels like knowing. During Tuesday's practice, the answer was still warm from the last problem, so it came fast. That's not the same as it being stored for the long haul.
Why the brain lets it fade
This is going to sound backward, but forgetting is a feature, not a bug. Your child's brain is flooded with information every day. If it held onto all of it with equal strength, it would be useless, buried in noise. So the brain runs a quiet triage. Anything it doesn't see again soon gets marked as probably-not-important and allowed to fade.
The brain decides a fact is worth keeping based on one main signal. Did we need to work to remember this, more than once, spread out over time? A fact you retrieved with effort on Monday, again on Wednesday, and again the next week gets flagged as clearly important, keep it. A fact you crammed twenty times in one sitting on Tuesday and never touched again gets swept out with the rest of Tuesday.
That's why the marathon practice session feels so productive and does so little. The kid looks fluent by problem thirty. But all thirty happened in the same short window, so the brain files them all under the same fading Tuesday tag.
What actually makes facts stick
The research here is old and boring and reliable. Two ideas do most of the work.
- Spacing. Practice the same facts across several short sessions over days and weeks, not one long push. Five minutes on four different days beats forty minutes on one.
- Retrieval. Make the child pull the answer from memory, not reread it. A flashcard where they answer before flipping is retrieval. Watching you point at a poster is not.
Put those together and you get the thing that works. Short, spaced practice where the child has to actually recall the answer, with a small stretch of forgetting in between. That stretch is the point. The little bit of struggle to remember is exactly what tells the brain this one matters.
Here's what that looks like at a kitchen table. You're not drilling forty facts. You're doing eight, maybe ten, for four minutes, a few times a week. You mix in facts from last week so the old ones keep getting refreshed. When a fact comes back slow, that's not failure, that's the rep doing its job. The next time she retrieves it, the path in the grass gets a little more worn in.
The mistake most of us make
The natural instinct, when a child forgets, is to go back to the beginning and pile on more of the same day. More problems, longer sessions, do it until you've got it. It feels like effort should equal retention.
But you can't out-cram forgetting. Forty problems in one night and zero the rest of the week is the exact recipe for the Tuesday-to-Thursday drop. The kid isn't practicing wrong. The schedule is wrong.
If you switch to short and spaced, two things happen. The child stops dreading practice, because four minutes is survivable in a way that forty is not. And the facts start surviving the gap between sessions, because the gap is now part of the design instead of an accident.
What to say when they blank
When your child freezes on a fact she knew two days ago, resist the urge to say "we just did this." She knows. That's what makes it feel bad. Instead, treat the blank as normal, because it is.
Give her a second to hunt for it. If she finds it, that slow retrieval is worth more than an instant one, because she just did the work that pins it down. If she can't find it, tell her the answer plainly, move on, and make sure that fact shows up again in the next session or two.
Maya's sixes are solid now. It took about three weeks of short, spaced practice, not a heroic weekend. Her mom stopped panicking on Thursdays. And Maya stopped believing the story that she was the kind of kid who couldn't remember, which may have been the most important part of all.
