When Your Kid Says 'The Teacher Does It Differently'

You sit down to help with the subtraction homework. You show your kid how to borrow, the way you learned it, the way your parents learned it. And your kid looks at you like you've handed them a foreign coin and says, "That's not how the teacher does it." Now you're both annoyed, the homework isn't done, and you're wondering when arithmetic got reinvented behind your back.

I'm a teacher, and I promise the teacher does it differently for a reason, even if that reason didn't make it home in the backpack. Here's what's going on and how to help without turning the kitchen table into a standoff.

The method isn't the point. The understanding is.

When you and I learned subtraction, most of us learned one trick: line up the digits, borrow from the neighbor, get the answer. It works. But a lot of kids came out of it able to run the steps without any idea what borrowing actually was. They could get 62 minus 27 right on a worksheet and have no feel for the fact that they'd broken a ten into ten ones.

The newer approaches, the number lines, the breaking numbers apart, the "make a ten" moves, are trying to fix that. They're slower on paper and they look strange, but they're built to show the kid what's happening to the quantities, not just which digit to cross out. The old way was a recipe. The new way is trying to teach cooking.

That's the whole thing, really. The school isn't changing methods to torment you. They're trying to get to understanding before they get to speed.

Both of you are probably right

Here's the part that helps at the table: your way and the teacher's way usually land on the same answer, because they're the same math wearing different clothes.

Take 62 minus 27. Your way: borrow, 12 minus 7 is 5, then 5 minus 2 is 3, answer 35. The way a lot of kids learn it now: 27 up to 30 is 3, 30 up to 62 is 32, so 3 plus 32 is 35. Different path, same 35. Neither is wrong. One's just built to show the distance between the numbers instead of hiding it inside a borrow.

Once you see that they meet in the middle, the pressure comes off. You're not competing with the teacher. You're two roads to the same town.

What to actually do at homework time

The mistake I see most is a well-meaning parent overriding the school's method with their own, and now the kid has two systems half-learned and trusts neither. Please don't do that. A few things that work better:

  • Ask the kid to teach you their way first. "Show me how the teacher does it" does three things. It gets them talking, it tells you whether they actually understand it, and it keeps you from steamrolling a method you don't know yet. Half the time the kid teaching it out loud is the thing that makes it click.
  • If they're truly stuck, offer your way as a second tool, not a replacement. "Here's another way some people do it. Use whichever one makes sense to you." That respects the classroom without pretending your knowledge is useless.
  • Focus on whether the answer makes sense, not the steps. "Does 35 feel about right for 62 take away 27? It's a bit more than half, yeah, that tracks." Estimation checking is a skill the method can't give them and you can.
  • When you're genuinely lost, write a note to the teacher. No shame in it. "We couldn't figure out the strategy on number 4" is useful information for the teacher and takes the fight out of your living room.

When to actually worry

Most of the time, "the teacher does it differently" is normal friction and nothing more. But two things are worth watching.

If your kid can produce the steps of the new method but can't tell you what the answer means or whether it's reasonable, they've memorized the new recipe without the understanding, which is the exact thing the method was supposed to prevent. That's worth a quiet conversation with the teacher.

And if the new method is genuinely confusing your kid, not just you, don't assume they'll grow into it. Some kids need the standard algorithm to hold onto and the conceptual stuff layered on later. A good teacher would rather hear "this strategy isn't landing for her" than have a kid quietly drown in it for a semester.

The real work is not picking a winner

Your job at homework time isn't to prove your method or defend theirs. It's to get your kid to the place where they understand what the numbers are doing, by whatever road works. Some nights that's the school's number line. Some nights it's your old borrowing trick. Usually it's both, sitting side by side, and the kid picking up whichever one their brain grabs first.

My own kid went through a stretch of insisting my way was "wrong" because it wasn't what the teacher drew on the board. I stopped arguing and just asked her to walk me through hers. Turned out she understood it fine. She just wanted me to stop rewriting her homework. Fair enough. I put my pencil down, and we got along a lot better after that.
