Breaking Big Homework Problems Into Steps Your Kid Can Handle

A fourth grader I tutored used to read a word problem, drop her pencil, and say "I can't." Not "this is hard." Just "I can't," as if the whole thing had already beaten her. The problem in front of her that day was about a farmer, some chickens, and how many eggs he'd have after a week. Four sentences. To her, it might as well have been written in code.

The reason kids freeze isn't usually the math. It's the size. A big problem hits them all at once, and their brain reads it as one impossible thing instead of five small doable things. Learning to break down math problems for kids is really about teaching them to stop staring at the whole wall and start looking at one brick.

I've spent years watching this exact moment, and the fix is more mechanical than you'd think. You don't need to be good at math yourself to help. You need a routine your kid can lean on when their brain wants to shut down.

Read it twice, on purpose

Kids rush the reading. They skim the words, panic at the numbers, and start flailing. So the first rule is boring and powerful: read it twice before touching the math.

The first read is just to know what's happening. No solving. What's the story? A farmer, chickens, eggs. Fine.

The second read is a treasure hunt. Now you're hunting for the actual question and the numbers that matter. I have kids do two physical things:

  • Underline the question. What is this problem actually asking me to find?
  • Circle the numbers and what each one means. Not just "12," but "12 chickens."

That circling matters more than it looks. Half the errors I see come from a kid grabbing a number without knowing what it stands for. When they label it, "12 chickens, 3 eggs a day each," the path forward often shows up on its own.

Turn one big question into small ones

Here's the heart of it. Most homework problems that scare kids are really two or three little problems wearing a trench coat. Your job is to help them find the seams.

Take the egg problem. "How many eggs in a week?" is the big question, and it's too big to answer in one jump. But split it up:

  • How many eggs does one chicken lay in a day? (3)
  • How many eggs do all 12 chickens lay in one day? (3 times 12, so 36)
  • How many in a week? (36 times 7, so 252)

Suddenly it's three easy questions instead of one scary one. My tutoring student could answer every single one of those on her own. She just couldn't answer the big one cold. The skill isn't the multiplication. It's the chopping.

A good prompt to teach them is: "What would you need to know first before you can answer the real question?" That single question, asked over and over, is basically what mathematicians do their whole careers. You're not giving them the answer. You're handing them the tool to find it.

Make the invisible visible

When steps still feel slippery, get them out of the kid's head and onto paper. A problem you can see is far less scary than one swirling around inside.

Some ways to do that:

  • Draw it. Twelve little chicken scribbles, three egg dots under each. It looks like play, but the picture is doing real math.
  • Make a T-chart. Day 1: 36 eggs. Day 2: 72. Watching the pattern build gives a kid confidence that the numbers are behaving.
  • Write each step on its own line. One line, one small answer. This also makes it easy to find where things went wrong later, instead of scanning a messy blob of scribbles.

The point of all of this is to slow the whole thing down. Rushing is the enemy. A kid who works one careful step at a time and truly understands each one is in far better shape than a kid who races to a final number they can't explain. Speed isn't the goal. Understanding the moves is.

When they get stuck mid-problem

Even with a good routine, kids hit walls partway through. That's normal, and how you respond teaches them whether being stuck is a disaster or just a step.

Resist the urge to jump in and finish it. Instead, back up to the last part they were sure about. "You knew how many eggs one chicken lays in a day. Good. So what changes when there are twelve of them?" You're rewinding to solid ground and letting them walk forward from there.

And if they get the wrong answer, treat it as information, not failure. "Let's check the second step. Does 36 make sense for one day?" Checking their own work is one of the most useful habits they can build, and it beats you catching every mistake for them.

That fourth grader eventually stopped saying "I can't" at the first glance. She'd sigh, pick up her pencil, underline the question, and start chopping the problem into pieces. She still didn't love math homework. But it had stopped being a wall. It had become a stack of small things she knew how to handle, one brick at a time.
