The Difference Between an App That Teaches and One That Just Quizzes
I opened a highly-rated math app for my son and got a subtraction problem within four seconds. No explanation, no example, nothing. Just 62 minus 47 and a keypad. He typed 25, it flashed red, subtracted a point, and served the next one. That app has a million downloads and a wall of five-star reviews, and it does not teach a single thing. It quizzes. The difference between a math app that teaches vs one that quizzes is the whole ballgame, and most apps land hard on the wrong side of it.
I've built software for fifteen years and I make a math app for my own kids, so I know how cheap it is to build a quiz and how hard it is to build teaching. Guess which one most companies ship.
A quiz asks. Teaching shows.
Here's the cleanest way to think about it. A quiz already assumes the kid knows the thing. It just checks. Teaching assumes the kid might not know it yet, and it does the work of getting them there.
An app that only quizzes has a very specific rhythm: problem, answer, right or wrong, next problem. It never stops to explain. It never shows the steps. When your kid gets something wrong, it tells them they're wrong and moves on, which is about as useful as a smoke detector that only beeps after the house burns down. It told you there was a problem. It did nothing to help.
An app that teaches breaks that rhythm. Somewhere in there it slows down. It shows an example worked out. It walks through the steps of a hard problem instead of just grading the answer. When a kid misses, it doesn't just flash red. It shows them what went wrong and gives them a path back.
The wrong-answer test tells you everything
If you only do one thing before handing an app to your kid, do this. Get a problem wrong on purpose and watch exactly what happens next. That reaction is the app's real personality, and it takes about ten seconds to see.
Here's what the two kinds of apps do with a wrong answer:
- The quiz: flashes red, maybe a sad sound, subtracts points, next problem
- The teacher: shows where the mistake was, walks the correct steps, lets the kid try again
That's it. That's the tell. A quiz treats a wrong answer as a verdict. A teacher treats it as the exact moment learning can happen, because a mistake is a kid telling you precisely what they don't understand yet. An app that throws that information away and just docks a point is wasting the single most valuable thing it gets.
I got 62 minus 47 wrong in that popular app three times in a row. Each time it just showed me the next problem. It never once mentioned regrouping, which is the entire reason a kid gets that problem wrong. It couldn't teach the concept because it doesn't know any concepts. It only knows answers.
Watch for grinding dressed up as learning
The sneaky part is that a lot of quiz apps look busy and educational. Points, streaks, confetti, a little character cheering. It feels like progress. But strip the decoration away and check what the kid is actually doing, and it's the same problem type over and over with no instruction attached. That's grinding, not learning.
Repetition has a place. Once a kid understands regrouping, drilling it until it's automatic is genuinely useful. The problem is repetition before understanding. Making a kid do fifty subtraction problems they don't understand doesn't teach subtraction. It teaches them they're bad at subtraction, and it wraps that lesson in confetti so nobody notices.
A real teaching app earns the drill. It shows the concept first, checks that the kid has it, and only then leans into practice. The order matters. Understanding, then repetition. Flip that order and you've built a machine for making kids anxious.
What I actually check before my kids see it
I spend about twenty minutes with any app pretending to be an eight year old before it goes anywhere near my kids. Here's the short list I run through, and you can do the same without knowing anything about code.
- How many taps until the first problem, and did it explain anything first?
- When I get one wrong, does it teach me or just judge me?
- Can I find a worked example, or a hint that actually helps mid-problem?
- Does it ever slow down, or is it just a firehose of problems?
- Are the rewards tied to understanding something, or just to grinding out volume?
If an app dumps a kid into problems with no instruction and reacts to mistakes with nothing but a red flash, it's a quiz wearing a teacher's clothes. Delete it. There are enough real ones out there that you don't have to settle. When I built Math Prizes, the wrong-answer moment was the first thing I got right, because everything else is decoration if that piece is broken.
Why the difference actually matters
You might be thinking a quiz is fine for practice, and honestly, for a kid who already understands the material, some quizzing is fine. The trouble is that most kids using these apps are still learning. They're the ones who most need teaching and least need a scoreboard telling them they're wrong.
A kid who gets quizzed on something they haven't been taught learns one thing well: that math is a place where you get judged and lose points. That's a terrible thing to install in an eight year old, and it's hard to uninstall later. A kid who gets taught, who sees a mistake turn into an explanation and then a second try, learns that math is something you can figure out. Same twenty minutes of screen time. Completely different thing landing in their head.
The graphics won't tell you which one you've got. The reviews won't either. You have to open it, get a problem wrong, and watch what it does. Ten seconds, and you'll know.
