How to Spot a Junk Math App in Under Five Minutes

Five minutes is all you need

I've written software for fifteen years, and I build a math app for my own kids, so I download a lot of the competition to see what they're doing. Most of it is junk. Not "could be better" junk. Actual junk, where the math is a costume and the real product is keeping a kid tapping. The good news is that knowing how to spot a bad educational app doesn't take a teaching degree or an engineering background. It takes about five minutes and a little suspicion, because the tells are always in the same places.

Here's what I do when I open one of these for the first time.

Count the ads and where they land

Open the app and start the first activity. Now watch for the first ad. In a junk app it shows up fast, and it shows up at the worst possible moment, which is right after your kid does something well. Get an answer right, here's a full-screen video ad. Finish a level, here's another. This isn't sloppy design. It's the design. The app is trained to interrupt exactly when your kid is feeling good, because that's when a tired thumb is most likely to fumble the tiny close button and tap the ad instead.

The other tell is the close button itself. Watch how hard it is to find. A junk app hides the X in a corner, makes it faint gray on white, delays it by five seconds, or shrinks it to the size of a grain of rice. A decent app makes the X obvious because it isn't trying to trap you. If you find yourself squinting to close an ad in a kids' app, you've learned everything you need to know about who that app is really built for.

Watch what happens on a wrong answer

This is the fastest real test. Deliberately get an answer wrong. Then watch what the app does.

A junk app does one of two things. Either it flashes a red X, plays a sad sound, and moves on, or worse, it just lets you keep guessing until you stumble onto the right button. Neither one teaches anything. The kid learns that wrong means "try another button," not "here's why that was wrong." Guess-until-it's-green is not learning. It's a slot machine with numbers on it.

A real app does something with the mistake. It shows the step the kid missed, or it walks back through the problem, or at minimum it doesn't let a kid brute-force the answer by tapping every option. That's the single clearest line between an app that teaches and an app that just occupies. If getting it wrong costs the kid nothing and teaches them nothing, the app doesn't care whether they learn. Test this in the first two minutes.

Check whether the rewards mean anything

Every kids' app has rewards. Coins, gems, stars, a little character that levels up. That's fine. Kids like earning things and there's nothing wrong with it. The question is what the reward is tied to.

In a junk app, the reward is tied to time. Play longer, earn more. Tap more, earn more. You can get the same coins by mashing easy problems you already know as you would by working through hard ones, so the app quietly steers your kid toward the easy stuff, because easy stuff keeps them playing and playing is the whole business model. Here's how to check it in about a minute:

  • Do a few problems that are clearly too easy for your kid. Watch the reward pile up anyway.
  • Notice whether the app ever pushes toward something harder, or just keeps serving comfortable problems forever.
  • See if there's any way to earn a reward for effort on a hard problem versus just churning easy ones.

If the coins flow the same whether the kid is learning or coasting, the coins are there to build a habit, not to mark progress. Rewards should be tied to real progress, to actually getting better at something, not to how many minutes a thumb stayed on the glass. When they're tied to time, you've got a slot machine wearing a backpack.

Look at how the difficulty moves

Play for three or four minutes and pay attention to whether the problems change. A junk app often runs on a tiny bank of questions on a loop, or it never adjusts, so a kid who's ready for more sits there doing the same baby addition over and over because that's cheaper to build than real content. Repetition for its own sake isn't practice. It's filler, and kids feel the boredom of it even when they can't name it.

A real app notices. Get things right and it nudges harder. Struggle and it eases off or slows down to work through the thing you're missing. You can feel the difference within a few problems. One is responding to your kid. The other is running a tape loop and hoping the rewards keep them watching.

Read three one-star reviews before you trust the five-star ones

The five-star reviews are close to worthless, because a lot of junk apps prompt for a rating right after a win, when the kid is happy, and half of them are gamed anyway. Skip them. Sort the reviews to one and two stars and read a handful.

You're looking for a pattern, not a single angry parent. If three different people mention the same thing, believe it. The patterns that matter: "it's just ads," "you have to pay to do anything," "my kid figured out you can just tap until it's right," "the free version is useless." Those are the same complaints, over and over, across every junk app in the category, and they're written by people who already spent the five minutes so you don't have to.

The short version

You don't need to be technical to do this. Open the app and check five things. Where do the ads land and can you close them. What happens on a wrong answer. Are the rewards tied to progress or to time. Does the difficulty actually move. What do the one-star reviews keep saying. Any single red flag is a maybe. Two or three and you've got your answer, and it took less time than the app would've taken to serve your kid its first ad. Delete it and move on. There are a few genuinely good ones out there, and they pass all five of these without breaking a sweat.
