Should You Let Your Kid Use a Calculator or Photo-Solver on Homework?
My daughter came to me last fall with a homework sheet done in about four minutes flat, every answer correct, and a phone still warm in her hand. She'd pointed a photo-solver app at each problem, copied the answer, and moved on. The math was right. The learning was zero. That afternoon is why I have opinions about kids using calculator apps on homework, and why the honest answer isn't yes or no.
I've written software for fifteen years, and I build a small math app for my own kids on the side. So I know exactly what these tools do under the hood, and I know they're not evil. A calculator is a fine tool. A photo-solver is a different animal wearing the same costume. Lumping them together is where parents get confused.
A calculator and a photo-solver are not the same thing
This distinction is the whole ballgame, so let me be plain about it.
A calculator does the arithmetic. You still have to know what to type. If the problem is "a shirt costs $24 and is 25% off, what's the price," the calculator won't help you unless you already understand that you need to find 25% of 24 and subtract it. The thinking is still yours. The calculator just spares you the long multiplication.
A photo-solver does the thinking. You point it at the whole problem and it hands back the answer, and increasingly the steps too. There's nothing left for the kid to do except copy. The two tools live on the same phone and get talked about in the same breath, but one removes drudgery and the other removes the point.
When a calculator genuinely helps
There are real cases where I hand my kid the calculator without a second thought:
- When the arithmetic isn't the skill being practiced. If the lesson is about setting up a percentage or interpreting a graph, making her do long division by hand just adds friction that has nothing to do with what she's learning.
- When the numbers are ugly on purpose. Real-world problems have messy numbers. A calculator lets a kid work with 17.5% or $8.43 instead of dumbed-down round numbers, which keeps the problem realistic.
- When she's already proven she can do it by hand. Once a kid has shown they own a skill, drilling it forever by hand is the grinding I try to avoid. The calculator becomes a reasonable shortcut, the way an adult would use one.
The common thread: the calculator handles the mechanical part while the kid keeps doing the thinking. That's a tool, used the way tools are supposed to be used.
When the photo-solver quietly wrecks things
Here's what nobody tells you about photo-solvers. The problem isn't cheating in the "she'll get caught" sense. The problem is that they short-circuit the exact struggle that builds understanding.
Learning math is mostly about being stuck and working your way out. That uncomfortable minute where you don't know what to do next, and then you try something, and it works or it doesn't. That minute is the whole thing. A photo-solver deletes it. The kid never sits in the not-knowing long enough for anything to stick.
And the confidence it gives is fake. My daughter felt great about that four-minute homework sheet right up until the quiz, where there was no phone, and she froze on problems she'd "done" the night before. She hadn't done them. The app had. She'd watched.
There's also a quieter issue as an app builder I'll be honest about. A lot of these solvers are built to maximize how long you use the app, not how much you learn. The two goals point in opposite directions. A tool that actually taught you would try to make itself unnecessary. Most of them are not trying to become unnecessary.
How to tell which one is happening at your table
You don't need to hover. You need to check whether the thinking is still landing with your kid. A few quick tests:
- Ask them to explain one problem. Not the answer, the reasoning. "Why'd you subtract there?" If they can't say, a tool did the work.
- Cover the answer and ask them to redo one from scratch. Takes two minutes. Tells you everything.
- Watch the clock. Homework that used to take thirty minutes and now takes six isn't a breakthrough. It's a photo-solver.
None of this is about catching a kid in a lie. It's about knowing whether the homework did its job.
What I actually let my kids do
Here's my house rule, for whatever it's worth. Calculator, yes, once the underlying skill is solid and the arithmetic isn't the point of the assignment. Photo-solvers, we use them to check work after the work is done, never to produce it. Do the problem, then point the app at it and see if you got it right. Used that way, a solver is a patient answer key. Used the other way, it's a very efficient machine for not learning.
The tools aren't the enemy. A calculator has been fine for decades. The new thing is a phone that can do the whole assignment, and the only real defense is a parent who cares more about whether the thinking happened than whether the sheet got finished. My daughter still has that photo-solver on her phone. She just knows now that it's for checking, not for skipping. The freeze on that quiz taught her that better than I ever could have.
