The Tuesday-night bribe that stopped working
A dad I know used to pay his daughter a quarter per worksheet page. It worked for about three weeks. Then she started rushing, filling in any number to collect the quarter, and getting most of it wrong. He raised it to fifty cents. Same result, just more expensive. By the end of the month she had eleven dollars and no better at her seven times table than when they started.
That story is not unusual. It's what almost always happens when we try to make math practice stick with a reward stapled to the outside of it. The kid learns to produce finished pages, not to understand the math. The two things look identical on Tuesday night and turn out to be completely different by spring.
Why bribes and screens fizzle out

Screen time as payment has a second problem on top of the first. It teaches your child that math is the vegetable and the screen is the dessert. You have just told them, without saying it, that math is the bad part of the deal. Nobody grows to like the thing they had to be paid to tolerate.
There's also the escalation trap. Whatever you offer today becomes the floor tomorrow. The quarter turns into fifty cents. Twenty minutes of tablet time turns into forty. You end up negotiating with a seven-year-old every single night, and the math itself never gets more interesting to them.
What actually makes practice stick
The kids who keep going are the ones who feel themselves getting better. That's the whole secret, and it's less glamorous than any reward chart. Progress is the motivator. Your job is to make progress visible and small enough to feel every day.
Here's what that looks like in practice:
- Keep sessions short and finishable. Ten focused minutes beats forty distracted ones. A kid who finishes feels capable. A kid who runs out of steam feels defeated.
- Practice the edge, not the whole thing. If she knows facts up to five and stumbles on six through nine, spend the time there. Redoing the easy ones feels like busywork, and kids know busywork when they see it.
- Name the specific win. Not "good job" but "you did eight times seven without counting up, that's new." Kids can't feel progress they can't see. You have to point at it.
- Same time, same place. Right after dinner, at the kitchen table. Decisions are exhausting. A routine removes the nightly argument about whether and when.
Notice none of this is a prize. It's structure plus honest feedback about real improvement. That combination is what lasts, because it hooks into something a bribe never touches. The kid starts to want the feeling of being good at it.
The one thing that beats every reward chart
Let a kid teach you the thing they just learned. It sounds too simple to matter. It's the strongest tool I've got.
When my student Marcus finally understood regrouping in subtraction, I asked him to explain it to me like I'd never seen it before. He stood at the board for four minutes, walking me through borrowing from the tens place, correcting himself once, getting more confident with each step. He was not doing math practice at that point. He was showing off, and he loved it. That four minutes locked the concept in harder than another twenty worksheet problems would have.
Teaching forces a kid to organize what they know. It also feels great, which is the part bribes try and fail to buy. You cannot pay someone into the pride of explaining a hard thing clearly. They have to earn it, and once they've felt it, they'll chase it again.
When you do want to use rewards
I'm not against rewards on principle. I'm against rewards tied to nothing. There's a real difference between "here's a quarter for finishing" and "you learned all your sixes this week, let's celebrate that." The first pays for compliance. The second marks a genuine milestone.
If you use a reward, tie it to a real achievement, not to volume. Mastering a fact family is worth celebrating.
