How to Tell If Your Kid's Math Practice Is Actually Working

A dad told me his son did math for twenty minutes every single night, faithfully, for a whole semester, and his test scores didn't move an inch. He wanted to know what was wrong with the kid. Nothing was wrong with the kid. The practice was the problem. The boy was doing pages of problems he already knew how to do, over and over, because they were easy and he could finish fast and feel done.

That's the quiet failure nobody warns you about. Time spent is not the same as learning. If you're wondering whether your math practice is working, the amount of time is almost the least useful number to look at. Here's what actually tells you.

Real progress looks like new things getting easier, not old things staying easy

The clearest sign that practice is working is that something hard last month is not hard now. That's it. Not that they finished the page. Not that they got a sticker. That a specific type of problem that used to cause struggle now goes smoothly.

So pay attention to the edge of what your kid can do, not the middle. If your third grader breezes through single-digit addition every night, that's not practice, that's a warm-up they never leave. The learning happens at the point of difficulty, where they have to think, sometimes get it wrong, and adjust. A kid who never gets anything wrong in practice isn't practicing at the right level. They're just confirming what they already know.

I tell parents to keep a loose mental note. What could my kid not do in September? Can they do it in November? If the answer is a real, specific yes, the practice is working. If you can't name a single thing that got easier, it probably isn't, no matter how many minutes went in.

The busywork trap

Here's the thing about worksheets and drill apps. They're easy to measure and easy to feel good about. Twenty problems done, twenty minutes clocked, page complete. It all looks like progress. A lot of it is just motion.

Watch for these signs that practice has slid into busywork:

  • Your kid always finishes fast and never seems challenged.
  • The problems are all the same type, night after night.
  • They can get answers but go blank if you ask "why."
  • Speed is going up but understanding isn't. Fast wrong answers are still wrong.
  • They're doing it to be done, and the second the timer ends, the pencil drops.

None of those mean your kid is lazy. They mean the practice isn't asking anything of them. Repetition of stuff you've already mastered feels productive and teaches nothing. Real practice should have a little friction in it. Not misery, but effort. If it's frictionless every single time, it's maintenance at best.

The "explain it" test

The best cheap test I know takes about thirty seconds. Pick a problem your kid just got right and ask them to explain how they did it. Not the answer. The thinking.

A kid who really learned it can walk you through it, even clumsily. "I knew 8 times 6 because 8 times 5 is 40 and then one more 8 is 48." That's understanding. A kid who's been drilling without understanding will say "I just knew it" or "you carry the one" without being able to say why you carry it. That gap is your answer. If they can't explain a right answer, the right answer might be a memorized trick sitting on top of a hole.

I do this in class constantly. A boy once got every problem on a page correct and then couldn't tell me what any of the numbers meant. He'd learned the procedure like a dance routine, no idea what the steps were for. His practice looked perfect on paper and was building nothing underneath. We had to back up and rebuild.

Small signs that things are clicking

Progress isn't always a test score. Some of the best signals are things you'd miss if you weren't watching.

Your kid starts noticing math outside of homework. They split a candy bar and mention that each person gets a third. They estimate before they add and their guess is close. They correct themselves mid-problem without you saying anything. They complain less, not because the work got easier, but because it stopped feeling threatening. One of my students' parents told me the sign for them was that their daughter stopped hiding her math folder. That counts.

Those moments mean the math is becoming a way of thinking, not just a chore to survive. That's what working practice produces over time. A kid who owns a little more of it than they did before.

What to change if it isn't working

If you've read this far and recognized your own kid in the busywork section, the fix is usually simple. Make the practice a little harder and a lot more about understanding.

Cut the volume. Ten problems that make them think beat forty that don't. Aim just above their comfort level, at the stuff they can mostly do but have to work for. Ask "why" as often as "what's the answer." And tie any reward you use to real progress, a concept that clicked or a harder problem finally cracked, not to pages filled. When my own students earn something, I want it attached to a thing they genuinely couldn't do before. That's what makes the reward mean anything, and it's what keeps practice honest.

The dad with the twenty-minute son changed one thing. He stopped letting the kid pick easy pages and started giving him problems that were a stretch, fewer of them, and asked him to explain his work. Scores moved within a month. Same twenty minutes. Completely different twenty minutes.
