How To Fill Math Gaps From Last Year Without Overwhelming Your Kid
A boy joined my class in October, two months into the year, and on paper he was a fourth grader. In practice he couldn't reliably tell me what six times seven was. Every new lesson we did that depended on multiplication, and most of them did, landed on him like a foreign language. He wasn't behind because he was slow. He was behind because one skill from the year before had never locked in, and everything built on top of it was quietly collapsing.
That's what a math gap actually is. Not a vague "he's behind," but a specific missing piece that trips up everything downstream. Find the actual gap first

You have to get specific. Sit with your child and work backward until you hit the floor. Start with something from this year they're struggling with, then keep stepping back to the skill underneath it.
- Struggling with long division? Check whether the multiplication facts are solid.
- Struggling with adding fractions? Check whether they understand what a fraction even is, with a real object.
- Struggling with two-digit subtraction? Check whether regrouping (borrowing) actually makes sense to them, or if they're just following steps.
You're looking for the exact spot where confidence turns into guessing. That spot is the gap. My October student's gap wasn't "fourth grade math." It was one times table.
Fix one thing at a time
Once you find the gap, resist the urge to fix five things. Pick the single most foundational one and work only on that until it's genuinely solid. Foundational means the skill that the most other skills depend on. For elementary math, that's almost always the number facts: addition, subtraction, and especially the multiplication tables.
Here's why one at a time matters. A kid who feels behind is already carrying a story that math is the thing they're bad at. If you pile on a big remediation plan, you confirm the story. Ten quiet minutes on one skill, with visible progress, tells a different story. It says, this is a small fixable thing, and look, it's already getting better.
With my student, we did nothing but multiplication for about three weeks. Five minutes a day. That's it. Once those facts were automatic, a startling amount of his "fourth grade struggle" just evaporated, because the struggle had never really been about fourth grade.
Keep the daily dose small
Overwhelm comes from volume, not from difficulty. A single hard problem a kid wrestles with and solves builds more than a page of easy ones done in a fog. So keep the sessions short and frequent instead of long and rare.
Ten to fifteen minutes, most days, beats an hour on Sunday every time. The brain files things away better with spacing, and short sessions are sustainable, which means you'll actually keep doing them in week four when the novelty is gone. A big weekend catch-up session usually ends in tears for everyone and gets abandoned by the second weekend.
Aim for practice that makes them think, not practice that fills time. Repeating the same easy problem forty times isn't building anything. Five problems that stretch them, with you nearby to help when they get stuck, does the real work.
Make the practice make sense
There's a difference between a kid who can do a procedure and a kid who understands it, and gaps love to hide in that difference. A child can "borrow" in subtraction for a year by copying the steps and never know what the borrowing means. Then decimals arrive and the whole thing falls apart, because the understanding was never there to build on.
When you're repairing a gap, spend a little time on the why, not just the how. Pull out real objects. Twenty pennies to show what regrouping does. A pizza or a chocolate bar to show what a fraction is. A kid who understands why can rebuild a forgotten step. A kid who only memorized steps is one bad day away from losing it again.
Protect the relationship
This is the part that matters more than any worksheet. If filling the gap costs you your kid's willingness to try, you've lost more than you gained. A child who has decided math sessions with a parent are a source of shame will shut down, and a shut-down brain doesn't learn.
So a few guardrails:
- Praise the effort and the strategy, not the speed. "You didn't give up on that one" is worth more than "good, that was fast."
- Start below the gap so they get some easy wins before you climb. Confidence is fuel.
- Stop while it's still going okay. End on a success, not on the problem that finally broke them.
- Don't let your own math anxiety leak. If you're tense, they'll read it as "this is scary."
A tutor or teacher can help if the gaps are wide, and there's no shame in asking. But most single-skill gaps are things a patient adult and ten minutes a day can close.
