How to Check Math Homework When You Are Not Sure of the Answer Either

A dad emailed me once, half joking and half panicked, because his fourth grader had asked him to check a page of long division and he realized somewhere around the second problem that he had absolutely no idea if the answers were right. He'd done long division decades ago. It was gone. He wanted to know how he was supposed to check math homework without knowing the answer himself. I told him the truth I tell every parent: you don't need to know the answer, and honestly, knowing it can get in the way.

The whole job of checking homework isn't to grade it. That's the teacher's job. Your job is to catch obvious wrecks and to make your kid think a little harder about their own work. You can do both without remembering a single algorithm, and here's how I coach parents to do it.

Ask the kid to explain it to you

This is the big one, and it works on any topic at any grade. Instead of checking the answer, ask the kid to walk you through how they got it. "Show me how you did this one." Then actually listen, and stay curious instead of leading.

Two things happen. First, half the time the kid catches their own mistake the second they have to say the steps out loud. Explaining forces them to slow down, and slow is where errors show up. Second, when a kid can't explain a step, that's the exact spot they don't understand, and now you've found it without needing to know the math yourself. You're not the answer key. You're the person who makes them replay the tape.

The trick is to keep a straight face on the right ones too. If you only ask them to explain the ones you suspect are wrong, they'll figure that out fast. Ask on a few they got right, so "explain it" stops being a signal that they messed up.

Use the checks the math checks itself with

Math is polite enough to come with built-in ways to check it, and most of them don't require you to redo the problem. You just have to know which one fits.

  • Addition and subtraction undo each other. If they say 62 minus 28 is 34, add 34 and 28 back. You should land on 62. This one you can do in your head.
  • Multiplication and division undo each other too. If 84 divided by 7 is 12, then 12 times 7 should be 84.
  • Estimate before you trust the exact number. 297 plus 405 has to be around 700. If the kid wrote 612, something's off, and you knew that without adding a single column.
  • For word problems, ask "does that answer even make sense?" If a problem about sharing 12 cookies among 4 kids comes out to 48, the number is shouting that something went sideways.

That estimation habit is the most useful one to build, in you and in the kid. You're not confirming the exact answer. You're checking whether it's in the right neighborhood, and a wrong answer is almost always in the wrong neighborhood.

Look for the mistake, not the answer

You can spot a lot of errors without doing any of the math, just by knowing where kids trip. After enough years you learn the usual suspects, and they're the same ones your kid is making.

Sloppy handwriting that lines up the columns wrong. A subtraction where they took the little number from the big number in each column no matter which was on top, so 52 minus 27 became 35. A decimal point that wandered. A kid who did the whole problem right and then copied the final answer onto the wrong line. Skipping every other problem because they didn't read the directions. None of that requires you to know how to solve it. It just requires you to look at the shape of the work, and messy work is where mistakes hide.

Know when to stop helping

Here's the part parents get wrong more than the math. There's a line between checking and taking over, and it's easy to cross when you're tired and the kid is whining and it's almost bedtime. The second you pick up the pencil and "just show them," the learning stops and you've done the homework, not your kid.

So set a limit before you sit down. If a problem is genuinely stumping both of you, the right move is to write a short note to the teacher, not to grind on it for forty-five minutes until everyone's crying. Teachers would much rather see "we got stuck on numbers 4 and 5, not sure what the lesson wanted" than a page of answers a parent clearly supplied. A struggling problem is information the teacher needs. A page you fixed hides it.

  • Give it a real try, then stop. One stuck problem is fine to leave blank with a note.
  • Never fix the answer for them. Point at the problem, not the solution.
  • If it's happening every night, that's not a homework issue, that's a "the kid needs help with this whole topic" issue. Tell the teacher.

The goal isn't a perfect page

The point of homework isn't a flawless sheet to hand in. It's practice, and practice that's all correct because a parent quietly cleaned it up teaches the teacher nothing and the kid even less. A page with a couple of honest mistakes on it is doing its job. It shows the teacher exactly where your kid is, which is the whole reason it exists.

So relax about being the answer key. That dad with the long division figured out that his fourth grader explaining the steps out loud caught more mistakes than he ever could have, and he never did have to relearn long division. You're not there to be right. You're there to make your kid slow down, say their thinking out loud, and check whether the answer makes any sense. That you can do at any grade, forever, no matter how far your own math has drifted.
