Have Your Kid Teach You the Problem: The Best Homework Trick I Know

Most homework help goes one direction. The kid is stuck, the parent leans over, and the parent explains. It feels productive. You said words, the answer got written down, everybody moved on. But a week later the same kind of problem shows up and your kid is just as lost as before.
Try flipping it. When your child hits a wall, don't explain anything. Instead say, "Okay, teach me. Pretend I've never seen this before." Then actually mean it. Let your kid teach you the math problem, out loud, step by step. This one move does more real work than an hour of you talking, and it's the homework trick I recommend most to parents who feel like nothing is sticking.
Why It Works Better Than Explaining
When you explain a problem, you can't see inside your kid's head. You're guessing where the confusion lives. Maybe you re-explain the part they already understood and skip right past the part that's actually broken. That's why the same problem keeps coming back.
When your child teaches you, the broken spot shows up on its own. You'll be following along fine, and then they'll hit a step and mumble, or skip it, or do something that makes no sense. That mumble is the whole answer. That's the exact gap. You didn't have to guess. They showed you.
There's a name for this in learning research. Explaining something out loud forces you to organize it, and the places where your organization falls apart are the places you don't really understand yet. Teachers know this feeling well. You never learn a topic as deeply as the year you first have to teach it.
What to Actually Say
The trick lives in your questions. You want to sound genuinely curious, not like you're quizzing them. A kid can smell a pop quiz from across the room and shuts down. Keep it warm and a little bit dumb.
- "Wait, why did you put that number there?"
- "What does this symbol mean again? I forgot."
- "You lost me. Can you go back one step?"
- "How did you know to do that part first?"
Play a little dense on purpose. If your fourth grader is doing 43 minus 27 and breezes past the regrouping, stop them. "Hold on. You crossed out the 4 and wrote a 3. Why'd you do that?" If they can explain it, they own it. If they can't, you just found the exact thing to work on, and you found it in about fifteen seconds.
The Silence Is the Point
The hardest part of this is your mouth. When your kid stalls, every instinct says jump in and rescue them. Don't. Count to ten in your head. Let the silence sit there and get a little uncomfortable.
Most of the time the kid fills the silence themselves. They'll stare at the page, and then something clicks, and they'll say "oh wait" and fix it without you saying a word. That "oh wait" is worth more than any answer you could hand them, because they got there on their own. Your job in that moment is to be quiet and let it happen.
If the silence stretches and they're truly stuck, you still don't explain. You ask a smaller question. Narrow it down. "Okay, forget the whole problem. Just this one step. What's 13 minus 7?" Shrink the problem until you find the piece they can do, then build back up from there.
When Your Kid Teaches It Wrong
Sometimes your child will confidently teach you a method that's flat wrong, or a shortcut that only works by accident. Resist the urge to correct it right away. Let them finish the whole explanation first. Then ask a question that pokes at the broken logic.
Say they insist that to compare 0.5 and 0.35, the bigger one is 0.35 because it has more digits. Don't say "no." Say, "Interesting. So is thirty-five cents more than fifty cents?" Now they have to check their own rule against something they understand, and money is something a kid understands cold. The rule cracks on its own, and a rule that cracks on its own stays fixed. A rule you cracked for them tends to grow right back.
The Quiet Payoff
The best part of this habit shows up months later. A kid who's used to teaching the problem starts teaching it to themselves under their breath while they work. You'll hear them muttering the steps out loud when they think nobody's listening. That's the voice of a kid who's learned that math is something you talk yourself through, not something that's either magically clear or hopelessly stuck.
You don't need to be good at math to do this. In fact being a little rusty helps, because your confusion is real and your kid can tell. You're not performing curiosity. You genuinely don't remember how to do long division, and your kid gets to be the one who knows. That's a good feeling for a nine-year-old, and it turns the homework table from a place where they get corrected into a place where they get to be the expert. That change alone is worth more than the right answer on any single worksheet.
