Free vs Paid Math Apps: What You Actually Give Up When You Pay Nothing
I've written software for fifteen years, and I build a math app for my own kids. So when I say a free app is never actually free, I mean it in the most literal, spreadsheet way possible. Somebody paid to write that code. Somebody pays every month to keep the servers on. That money comes from somewhere, and if it isn't coming from your wallet, it's coming from your kid.
That's the whole thing to understand about free vs paid math apps for kids. It isn't a question of price. It's a question of who the customer is. In a paid app, you are the customer. In a free app, your child's attention is the product, and the actual customers are advertisers or whoever wants to sell you the upgrade.
What "free" is really billing you for
Free apps have to make money some other way, and there are only a handful of ways to do it. Once you know them, you can spot which one you're dealing with in about two minutes.
- Ads. These pay per view, so the app is designed to show your kid as many as possible. That means built-in dead time where the "reward" is watching a 30-second video for a toy.
- In-app purchases. The free version is the trailer. The good stuff is behind a button, and the button is placed exactly where a frustrated 7-year-old will tap it.
- Data collection. Some free apps quietly log behavior and sell it. For a kids app this should be a hard no, and there are real laws about it (COPPA in the US), but not everyone follows them.
- A loss leader. The app is free to get you in the door for a subscription pitch a week later. This one is often the most honest, because at least the money is on the table.
None of these are automatically evil. Ads keep a lot of genuinely good stuff free. But every one of them creates a small tug-of-war between what makes money and what helps your kid learn, and the money usually wins the small fights.
The tell: does the app want your kid to finish?
Here is the cleanest test I know. A learning tool wants your kid to master something and move on. An attention product wants your kid to never move on.
My daughter had a free times-tables app for about a week. She was actually getting her sixes down, which is the hard set for a lot of kids. Then she hit a wall where the next level was locked, and the only way through was either watching three ads back to back or buying a "gem pack" for $4.99. She didn't need more practice. She needed the next problem. The app knew that, and it turned her progress into a checkout screen.
That's the moment to look for. When your kid does well, does the app celebrate and give them more math, or does it use the good feeling as a place to sell something? A tool rewards progress. A slot machine rewards the machine.
When paid is worth it (and when it genuinely isn't)
I'm not going to tell you to always pay. I've seen $12-a-month apps that are worse than free flashcards. Price is not quality. But paying does change the incentive, because now the company only keeps your money if you feel like it's helping. That's a healthier deal.
Paying is usually worth it when:
- The app covers a real span of skills, not one trick, so it grows with your kid across a couple of grades.
- There are no ads and no upsells aimed at your child during use.
- You can see actual progress (what they've learned, where they're stuck), not just a coin count.
- The rewards are tied to real work. A kid should earn something for getting better at math, not for opening the app 14 days in a row.
It's genuinely not worth paying when your kid needs ten minutes of practice on one specific thing, like number bonds to 10 or basic addition. A free app, a deck of index cards, or honestly a page of problems you write at the kitchen table will do that fine. Don't buy a subscription to solve a two-week problem.
Read the receipts before you install
You can learn most of what you need before your kid ever taps the icon. On the App Store or Google Play listing, look for three things.
First, the "In-App Purchases" section. If it lists items like "5000 Gems, $19.99," that app's economy is built to sell your kid stuff, full stop. Second, the age rating and the data-privacy label. Apple's "App Privacy" card tells you what gets collected and whether it's linked to your child. Third, the one-star reviews. Skip the five-stars and the one-stars that are just "it crashed." Look for parents saying "my kid got stuck behind a paywall" or "ads every 30 seconds." Those are the honest field reports.
Two minutes of reading saves you the conversation where you explain to a crying kid why the game asked for your credit card.
What I actually do at home
For my own kids, the rule is simple. No ads in anything they use to learn, and no currency that can be bought with real money. Earn it or don't have it. That constraint alone throws out most of the free category and a fair number of paid ones too.
When we built Math Prizes, that was the line we would not cross: a kid earns tickets by getting better at math, and there's no button anywhere that lets you buy your way past the actual work. That's a design choice with a real cost, because ads and gem packs are how these apps usually pay for themselves. But it's the only version I wanted my own kids using.
The honest answer to free vs paid is that both can be fine and both can be junk. What matters is whether the app is trying to teach your kid or trying to keep them. Watch what happens the moment your child does well. The app will tell you which one it is.
