She wasn't cheating so much as playing the game the app actually rewarded. That afternoon told me more about how these things are built than any review ever did.

I've written software for fifteen years, and I build a small math app for my own kids on nights and weekends. So when people ask me for the best math fact practice app, my honest answer is that most of them are optimizing for the wrong thing. They're built to maximize minutes in the app, because that's the number the company reports to investors. Whether your kid actually learns their times tables is a side effect at best. Once you know what to look for, you can tell the difference in about ten minutes of poking around.

Does it adapt to what your kid actually knows

Watch what triggers the confetti. If the app throws a party for tapping the screen a certain number of times, or for logging in nine days in a row regardless of whether the kid answered anything correctly, the reward is measuring attendance, not learning. My daughter's 340 points were pure attendance.

A reward system that helps looks boring by comparison. It pays out for:

  • Answering correctly, with harder problems worth more than easy ones.
  • Sticking with a fact your kid was missing until it clicks.
  • Real streaks of accuracy, not just streaks of showing up.

You want the celebration to mean "you got smarter," not "you're still here." Kids are sharp. Within a week they'll figure out exactly which behavior the app pays for, and then they'll do that behavior instead of the math. If the payout is disconnected from progress, you've built a little slot machine, and the house always wins on your kid's attention.

What's the ad and upsell situation

Open the app and count the interruptions in the first five minutes. Free math apps make money somehow, and if you're not paying, the payment is your kid's attention getting sold to advertisers. That's a legitimate business model, but it has a cost: every ad break yanks a seven-year-old out of a math thought and drops them in front of a game trailer. Then they have to climb back into the math, which for a lot of kids means they just don't.

The upsell pattern matters too. Some apps deliberately gate the useful part, let the kid hit a wall mid-session, and pop a "ask a grownup to upgrade" screen. That's designed to make your kid the one lobbying you. I don't love handing a company a tool to nag me through my own child. Look for a clear, honest price, or a free tier that's genuinely usable and not just bait.

Can you see what's really happening

You want a parent view that tells you the truth. Not "great job, 45 stars this week." That's marketing pointed at you. You want: which facts is my kid solid on, which ones are shaky, and are they getting faster over time. If the only report is a happy number that always goes up, the app is protecting your good mood, not informing you.

The best math fact practice app, for my money, treats you like an adult who wants real data. A short weekly note that says "still slow on the 6s and 7s, everything else is automatic now" is worth more than a wall of badges. You can act on the first one. You can only feel vaguely pleased by the second.

The plain test I'd run before paying

You don't need to trust any review, including this one. Load the app, hand it to your kid, and watch for ten minutes with these questions in your head:

  • When my kid misses a fact, does that fact come back around soon?
  • When the app celebrates, did my kid actually earn it by getting something right?
  • How many ads or upsell screens hit us in five minutes?
  • Can I find out which specific facts my kid is weak on?

Four questions, ten minutes. That'll tell you more than the star rating.
