Back to School Math Prep: Two Weeks to Shake Off the Rust
Every September I give a quick review quiz in the first week, and every September I can tell which kids touched math over the summer and which ones didn't. It's not about who did packets. It's about who kept the mental machinery warm. A kid who played a few card games in August usually beats a kid who grinded worksheets in June and then stopped cold in July.
That's the good news about back to school math prep. You don't need the whole summer. You need about two weeks and ten focused minutes a day. The goal isn't to teach ahead. It's to shake the rust off the things they already learned so the first weeks of school don't feel like starting from zero.
Why two weeks is enough
The summer slide is real, but it's mostly a fluency thing, not a knowledge thing. Kids don't forget that multiplication exists. They just get slow at it. Facts that were automatic in May take a beat longer in August, and that beat is enough to make a kid feel behind and discouraged on day one.
Fluency comes back fast because the pathways are already built. You're not laying new track, you're clearing the leaves off it. A week or so of daily light practice restores most of the speed. That's why cramming an entire curriculum in July is a waste. Short and recent beats long and distant every time.
Pick a start date about two weeks before the first bell. Any earlier and the benefit fades before school starts. Any later and you're rushing.
Week one: the facts that everything else stands on
The first week is about arithmetic facts, the boring bedrock stuff. When these are slow, everything downstream gets harder, because the kid burns all their brainpower on the small step and has nothing left for the actual problem.
Focus on whatever grade level your kid is heading into:
- Rising 1st and 2nd graders: adding and subtracting within 20. The magic targets are the pairs that make 10 (7 and 3, 6 and 4) and the doubles (7 plus 7). Get these smooth and the rest of early math opens up.
- Rising 3rd and 4th graders: multiplication and division facts, especially the ones kids dodge. Almost every kid is fine on the 2s, 5s, and 10s and shaky on the 6s, 7s, and 8s. Spend your time there, not on the ones they already own.
- Rising 5th graders and up: fractions and the times tables underneath them. A kid who's fuzzy on 7 times 8 will struggle with fractions, because reducing and finding common denominators leans on those facts constantly.
Keep each session under ten minutes. When a kid is done, stop, even if it feels short. Ending while it's still easy is what makes them willing to come back tomorrow. This is the anti-grinding rule, and it matters more than any specific drill.
Week two: use the facts, don't just recall them
Once the facts feel quicker, week two puts them to work in small real problems, so the arithmetic connects to something. This is where number sense gets rebuilt.
Word problems from daily life do this without a worksheet in sight. At the grocery store: "These cost $3 each and we need four, so how much before tax?" In the kitchen: "The recipe makes 12 cookies but I want 18, so how much more flour?" Splitting a pizza is fractions. Setting the table is division. Counting change is subtraction the useful way.
The point is to make the kid pull a fact and then do something with it. That two-step move, recall then apply, is exactly what school demands, and it's the part that gets rustiest over a summer of nothing.
If your kid balks at "doing math," don't announce it. Nobody at the store thinks "we're doing subtraction." Just ask the question and let them chew on it. A kid who wouldn't touch a worksheet will happily figure out whether $10 covers three $2.75 items, because the answer actually matters to them.
Keep it light, or it backfires
Here's the trap. A parent, worried and well-meaning, turns August into a math boot camp. Two weeks of pressure and tears. The kid walks into school already sick of math. That's worse than doing nothing, because now the subject carries a bad feeling before the year even starts.
A few guardrails keep it in the healthy zone:
- Same time each day if you can. Right after breakfast or before screen time both work. Predictable beats long.
- Stop at the first sign of a meltdown. A frustrated brain isn't learning anyway, and you're just building resentment.
- Notice real progress out loud. "You got that one way faster than yesterday" tells a kid the practice is doing something, which is the only reason to keep showing up.
- Mix in games. Cards, dice, and store-based questions all count. Twenty minutes of War with a deck of cards is more addition practice than most worksheets, and no kid cries over cards.
I've seen the reward angle work here too, as long as it's tied to real effort and not just minutes logged. What day one should feel like
If the two weeks go right, your kid won't walk in a math whiz. That was never the goal. They'll walk in warm. When the teacher throws up a review problem in week one, it'll feel familiar instead of foreign, and that small feeling of "oh, I know this" is worth more than any packet.
So don't sacrifice the last two weeks of summer to worksheets. Keep the days free. Just carve out ten minutes, keep it light, and let the rest of August be August. The rust comes off faster than you'd think, and your kid gets to start the year feeling ready instead of behind.
