Why Your Kid Wants One More Level (and How Games Are Built to Make Them)
My son asked for "one more level" so many nights in a row that I finally sat down and counted the mechanics working against me. I build software, including a math app for my own kids, so I know most of these tricks by name. There were at least six of them stacked on top of each other in the game he was playing. He's seven. He didn't stand a chance, and honestly neither did I.
If you want to understand why games are addictive for kids, you have to start with an uncomfortable fact. A lot of these games are built by teams whose actual job is to maximize the time your kid spends playing. Not their fun, exactly. Their time and, eventually, their money. Those teams are very good at it. They run experiments on millions of players and keep whatever keeps people tapping. What you're up against at bedtime isn't your kid's lack of willpower. It's the winning result of thousands of those experiments.
The loop is the product
Every one of these games is built around a loop: do a small action, get a reward, do it again. The genius is in how the reward gets timed.
If a game rewarded you every single time, you'd get bored. If it never rewarded you, you'd quit. So the reward shows up on a variable schedule. Sometimes you win big, sometimes nothing, and you can't predict which. That unpredictability is the single most powerful hook in the whole business, and it's the same mechanism that makes slot machines work. Your kid's brain gets a little dopamine bump not from the reward itself but from the maybe. The chance is the drug.
Here's what that looks like in practice. Open a loot box or spin a wheel, and most of the time you get something forgettable. Every so often you get something great. So you keep opening, because this next one could be the great one. Adults fall for this. A first grader has no defense at all.
The specific tricks, named
Once you can spot them, you'll see them everywhere. The common ones:
- The near miss. You lose, but you almost won. The game shows you exactly how close you were. This reads to your brain as "I nearly had it" instead of "I lost," and it drives another try harder than an actual win would.
- Streaks. Play every day or you lose your streak. This isn't about fun. It's a guilt loop designed to get your kid back tomorrow whether or not they want to be there.
- The cliffhanger. Levels are tuned so you almost never finish at a clean stopping point. You end mid-progress, one bar from the next reward, which is the worst possible moment to put the tablet down.
- Fake urgency. A timer, a limited-time event, a deal that expires. The countdown exists to override the pause where a kid might otherwise think "eh, I'm done."
- Progress you can lose. Currencies, energy that refills slowly, meters that drain. When quitting means losing something, kids don't quit.
None of these are accidents. Each one is a knob a designer turned on purpose, and each one was tested to prove it increases play time.
Why "one more level" is never really one more
The reason your kid genuinely means "just one more" and then wants another is that the game is built so the next stopping point keeps moving. Finish a level and you're immediately shown the next reward, two-thirds filled. You didn't reach a resting place. You landed in the middle of the next hook.
I felt this myself testing a game for research. I told myself I'd stop at level 10. At level 10 there was a shiny thing dangling at level 11, and a timer, and a streak I didn't want to break. I'm a grown adult who knows exactly how the machine works, and I still had to physically close the app to stop. Now picture a kid with a fully formed craving and a barely formed brake pedal.
How to tell a teaching tool from a slot machine
Not every game is engineered to trap your kid. The tell is what the reward is attached to.
In a manipulative game, the reward is tied to time and chance. Keep tapping, keep spinning, and eventually good things happen more or less at random. The activity itself is filler between rewards.
In a real learning tool, the reward is tied to actually getting better at something. You earn it by solving a problem you couldn't solve before, and if you already knew the answer, the game doesn't pretend you accomplished something. There's no mystery box that pays out for mindless repetition. When I built our math app I made a point of tying rewards to real progress rather than raw play time, because the whole point falls apart the moment you reward grinding.
A quick gut check you can run on any game: if your kid quit right now, would they have learned or made anything real, or just spent time feeding a meter? If it's the meter, the game was built to keep them, not to help them.
What you can actually do
You won't out-willpower a team of professional retention engineers, and neither will your kid, so don't frame it as willpower. Set the stop before you start. "We're doing three levels, then we're done" beats "stop when you're ready," because "ready" is a moment the game is specifically designed to never let arrive.
And it's worth telling kids the truth, in plain words, about why the game keeps pulling them back. My son was genuinely interested when I explained that a company makes money when he keeps playing and pays adults to figure out how to make him. It didn't cure the craving. But it turned the game from a thing that happens to him into a thing he can see happening, and that's the start of him running it instead of it running him.
