The Right Way to Use Prizes So They Fuel Learning, Not Replace It
The sticker that stopped working in March
Every fall a parent tells me the same story around November. They started a reward chart in September. A sticker for every worksheet, a toy at ten stickers. It worked beautifully for about six weeks. Then the kid started asking how many stickers a page was worth before they'd pick up a pencil. By March the kid wouldn't do math without a payout, and the payouts kept needing to get bigger.
That's not a kid problem. That's a design problem. Using prizes to motivate kids can absolutely work, and I use rewards in my classroom without apology. But there's a right way and a wrong way, and the difference comes down to one question: what exactly are you paying for?
Reward the thing you actually want more of
Here's the trap. Most reward systems pay for volume. Finish the page, get the sticker. Do twenty problems, earn the prize. So the kid optimizes for volume. They rush, they guess, they do the easy problems and skip the hard ones, because none of that matters to the payout. You wanted understanding. You bought speed.
Flip it. Pay for the behavior you'd be thrilled to see more of.
- Reward effort on hard problems, not completed pages. "You stuck with that one for five minutes and didn't quit" is worth more than "you finished."
- Reward strategies, not just right answers. If they explain how they got there, that's the good stuff. Guessing lucky and moving on is not.
- Reward showing up, especially early. A kid who practices ten minutes a day for a week has built something real. That deserves a prize more than a lucky perfect score does.
When the prize is tied to real progress, the prize is teaching the habit. When it's tied to raw output, it's teaching the kid to grind for a payout, and grinding is the opposite of learning.
Prizes start the engine, they don't run it
There's a real fear behind all this, and it's a fair one. Parents worry that if they hand out prizes, the kid will never want to learn for its own sake. That external rewards will crowd out the internal drive we actually want.
It can happen. But it usually happens for a specific reason. It happens when the prize is the only reason to do the thing, and the thing itself never gets any better.
Think about it from the kid's side. Math is hard and confusing and a little scary. A prize gives them a reason to sit down at all. But once they're sitting, if the math starts to click, if they beat a problem that beat them yesterday, something else kicks in. That feeling of getting it. The prize was the ignition. The satisfaction of actually understanding is the engine that keeps running after you stop handing out prizes.
Which means your real job isn't picking the perfect prize. It's making sure the kid experiences enough small wins that the internal engine has a chance to catch. A prize with no learning underneath it is just a bribe on a timer. It runs out.
Keep the prizes small, frequent, and honest
The parents whose systems collapse almost always made the prizes too big. A new video game for a good report card sounds motivating. In practice it's so far away and so all-or-nothing that a kid can't feel the connection between tonight's ten minutes and a payoff three months out.
Small and frequent beats big and rare. A few things that hold up over a school year:
- Cheap and immediate wins. Pick the movie Friday, an extra bedtime story, choosing dinner. Kids value control and attention more than stuff, and neither one costs money.
- Effort-based, not outcome-based. "You practiced every day this week" is inside their control. "You got 100" isn't, and paying for it teaches them to fear the days they don't.

When to start letting the prizes fade
The goal isn't prizes forever. It's a kid who eventually practices because they can and it feels good. So plan the exit from the start.
Watch for the day your kid does the math without asking what they get. It'll happen in small moments first. They'll finish a problem and be pleased with themselves before you say anything. When you see that, lean into it. Notice it out loud. "You figured that out on your own, didn't you." That kind of specific attention is a reward too, and it's the one that lasts.
Then let the material rewards get further apart, quietly. Not with an announcement that the party's over, just a gradual shift from a prize every day to a prize for a strong week to a prize for a real milestone. You're weaning the engine off the ignition.
The kid whose stickers stopped working in March didn't need bigger stickers. They needed a system that paid for the right things, small enough to feel connected to the work, tied to effort they controlled, and built to fade as the real thing took over. Prizes done right don't replace the love of learning. They buy a kid enough time to find it.
