IEPs, 504s, and Math: What to Actually Ask For

What Nobody Tells You Before the Meeting

The first IEP meeting I sat in as a teacher, the parent came in with a folder full of report cards and no idea what she was allowed to ask for. She kept saying "I just want him to do better in math," and the team kept nodding, and nothing concrete got written down. She left with a plan that said her son would "receive support," which means almost nothing.

Here's the thing to understand walking in. An IEP or a 504 is a legal document, and it only works if the accommodations are specific. "Extra help" is not an accommodation. "Small group instruction for math four times a week" is. If you're building an IEP for math accommodations, or a 504 plan that touches math, your job is to push for language that's concrete enough that a substitute teacher could read it and know exactly what to do.

IEP or 504: Which One Are We Talking About

These two get mixed up constantly, so a quick plain-language version. A 504 plan removes barriers so a kid can access the same instruction as everyone else. Think extra time on a test, a calculator, a quiet room. It doesn't change what's being taught.

An IEP goes further. It's for kids who need actual specialized instruction, not just adjustments to the environment. An IEP can change what and how a child is taught in math, set specific goals, and require services like time with a special education teacher. A math learning disability, often called dyscalculia, usually lands a kid in IEP territory rather than a 504, because they need the teaching itself to be different, not just more time.

If you're not sure which your child needs, that's fine. You can request an evaluation in writing, and the school has a legal timeline to respond. Put the request in an email so there's a dated paper trail.

Accommodations Worth Asking For in Math

This is the part parents come for, so let me be specific. These are the math accommodations I've seen make a real difference, not the vague ones that end up meaning nothing.

  • A multiplication chart or number line, always available. For a kid whose brain doesn't hold math facts, forcing recall blocks them from the actual thinking. Give them the reference and let them do the reasoning.
  • Fewer problems, same difficulty. Ten problems that show understanding beat forty that just exhaust a struggling kid. Ask for reduced problem sets, not easier ones.
  • Extra time on math tests, in a low-distraction setting. Processing speed and math anxiety are real, and a ticking clock in a noisy room makes both worse.
  • Problems read aloud. A surprising number of "math" struggles are actually reading struggles hiding inside word problems. If the kid can do the math when someone reads the problem, that tells you a lot.
  • Graph paper for lining up digits. Kids who lose track of place value often just can't keep their columns straight. Cheap fix, big difference.
  • Credit for the method, not only the final answer. A kid who set up the problem right but slipped on one subtraction understood the math. Ask that partial credit reflect that.

Ask that each one be written with a frequency and a setting. "Calculator permitted" is weaker than "calculator permitted for all multi-step problems and assessments." Specific is what protects your kid.

Push for Real Goals, Not Comfort

Here's a tension worth naming. Accommodations should remove barriers, but they should not quietly lower the ceiling on what your child is expected to learn. There's a difference between "we'll give him a calculator so he can access grade-level problem solving" and "we'll give him a calculator so we can stop worrying about whether he understands the operations." The first opens a door. The second closes one.

So when the team writes math goals, look at them hard. A good goal is measurable and it aims at growth. "Given a two-step word problem, the student will correctly identify the operations needed in 4 out of 5 trials." That's something you can actually check. A goal like "the student will improve in math" is a goal that lets everyone off the hook, yours included.

You're allowed to say, "I want him supported and I want him challenged. What does the plan do to make sure he's still learning new math, not just getting through it?" That's a fair question and a good team will have an answer.

You Are on the Team

The word that matters most in that meeting is team. You are a full member of it, not a guest they're informing. You know things about your kid that no assessment captures, like the fact that he cries at homework or that he can explain fractions perfectly out loud but freezes on paper. Say those things. They belong in the record.

And you can disagree. If a proposed accommodation feels wrong, or a goal feels too low, or the plan is too vague, you can ask for it to be changed before you sign. You can also ask for a follow-up meeting if something isn't working once the school year is underway. The plan is not carved in stone. It's supposed to change as your kid does.

That mom with the folder of report cards? She came back the next year with a page of specific requests, most of them from a list a friend had given her. She got small group instruction written in with a frequency, problems read aloud, and a real measurable goal. Her son didn't magically love math after that, but he stopped dreading it, and his numbers came up. The difference wasn't that the school suddenly cared more. It's that she walked in knowing what to ask for.
