Could It Be Dyscalculia? What I Look for as a Teacher

There was a third grader in my room, I'll call her Nadia, who could read a chapter book two grades above level but couldn't reliably tell me whether 8 was bigger than 5. Not because she wasn't trying. She'd stare at the two numbers like they were written in a language she'd never seen. That gap, a sharp kid who falls apart on the most basic number sense, is one of the first dyscalculia signs a teacher learns to notice. It's not laziness and it's not a bad day. It's a pattern.

I've taught elementary math for a long time, and I want to be careful here. I can't diagnose anyone. Neither can a blog post. But teachers spend six hours a day watching kids do math, and we see things a single homework session at the kitchen table might miss. So here's what actually catches my attention.

The number sense just isn't there

Most math struggles come and go. A kid gets stuck on regrouping, we work on it for two weeks, it clicks. Dyscalculia looks different because the foundation underneath everything seems shaky, no matter how many times you build it.

Here's what I mean in practice:

  • Comparing quantities is genuinely hard. Ask which pile has more, seven pennies or four, and the child counts each one every single time. They can't just look and know. That instant sense of "more" and "less" that most kids develop by kindergarten never seems to arrive.
  • Counting stays effortful way past the age it should. A second grader who still counts on fingers for 4 plus 3, months into the year, after real teaching, is worth a closer look.
  • Numbers and their symbols don't stick. They might write 6 backward long after other kids stop, or read 21 as 12, or lose track of which digit means what.
  • Estimating is impossible. Ask a kid with typical development if a candy jar holds closer to 10 or 1,000 jellybeans and they'll make a reasonable guess. A child with dyscalculia often has no anchor at all.

None of these alone means much. Plenty of kids do one of these on a tired Tuesday. What I watch for is the cluster, showing up over months, in a child who's clearly bright in other ways.

It shows up as anxiety, but the anxiety is the symptom

By the time a struggling kid lands in my class, they've usually decided they're "bad at math." I hear it in September. They shut down before they even read the problem. They ask to use the bathroom the second I pull out the number line.

The tricky part is that math anxiety and dyscalculia can look identical from across the room. Both kids freeze. Both avoid. The difference is what's underneath. An anxious kid often knows the material once you calm them down. A kid with dyscalculia can be perfectly calm and still not be able to line up the tens and ones. I try to separate the two by lowering the stakes completely, no timer, no grade, just me and them and some counting bears, and seeing what's actually there when the fear is gone.

What I do before I ever say the word

I don't walk up to a parent and announce their kid might have a learning difference. That's not my call, and I've been wrong before. What I do is get specific and start writing things down.

I'll pull the child for a few minutes and try tasks that isolate number sense. Can you count backward from 20? Put these five number cards in order? Tell me a number that comes between 40 and 50? I note what happens, not just right or wrong, but how they got there. Did they count on fingers? Guess? Give up?

Then I try a different approach for a while. A lot of what looks like a learning difference is actually a kid who was taught procedures without meaning. So I go back to concrete objects, real things they can move around, and I teach the concept from the ground up. If the child starts to get it, we were dealing with a gap in instruction. If weeks of hands-on, patient, low-pressure teaching move the needle almost not at all, that's when I sit down with the family.

When to push for a real evaluation

Here's the honest part. Dyscalculia is under-identified. Reading difficulties get caught because everyone's watching reading. Math? A struggling kid often just gets labeled as not a math person and passed along.

If your child shows the number sense signs above, consistently, across a school year, and targeted help isn't moving things, you have every right to request an evaluation in writing from your school. Put it in an email. Ask specifically about a math learning disability. The school has a legal obligation to respond. Don't wait for a teacher to bring it to you, because plenty of good teachers have thirty kids and miss it.

And in the meantime, the thing that helps every kid, dyscalculia or not, is going back to the concrete. Count real objects. Cook together and measure. Use money, actual coins, and make change. The goal isn't drilling faster. It's building the number sense that never got a chance to form. A kid who understands why 8 is more than 5 will get there, even if the road is longer.
