A Family Math Talk Makeover: 30 Days of Better Words Around Numbers
A dad picked his daughter up from my classroom last spring and asked how she did on the multiplication check. Before I could answer he said, "She gets it from me, I was always terrible at math." His daughter was standing right there. She heard it. And I watched something small close down in her face, because a kid takes that as permission to quit trying.
That's the moment this whole thing is about. Positive math talk at home isn't a program or a curriculum. It's the ordinary sentences that slip out while you're cooking, driving, or splitting a pizza. Kids absorb those sentences long before they absorb any formula. So here's a month of small changes, grouped by week, that you can actually keep up.
Week 1: Stop passing down "I'm bad at math"
The single most common thing I hear from parents, said with a shrug and a smile, is some version of "I was never a math person." I get why. For a lot of adults, math class was a place where they felt slow and embarrassed. But when you say it in front of your child, you hand them a ready-made excuse.
The swap is simple. Instead of "I'm bad at math," try "I have to think about this one too." Instead of "This is over my head," try "Let's figure it out together." You don't have to pretend you love long division. You just have to stop declaring math a family weakness, because kids believe you.
- "I was never a math person" becomes "Some of this took me a while to learn."
- "Just ask your teacher" becomes "Show me what you tried, and we'll look at it."
- "Ugh, math homework" becomes "Okay, what's on the page tonight?"
Week 2: Praise the work, not the brain
Here's a distinction that took me years to teach myself. "You're so smart" feels kind, but it aims the praise at something the child thinks they can't control. So the first time a problem gets hard, a "smart" kid worries the label is slipping, and the safest move is to stop trying.
Praise what they actually did. "You didn't give up on that one." "You tried three ways before it worked." "I saw you check your answer." Last year I had a second grader who redid a subtraction problem four times, muttering the whole way, and got it. I told him, "That was stubborn in the best way." He grinned and did the next one without complaint. Effort you name is effort that comes back.
Week 3: Make numbers part of normal life
Kids decide math is a school subject, sealed off from real life, unless you show them otherwise. The fix isn't flashcards at breakfast. It's just narrating the numbers already around you.
At the grocery store, hand your kid the job of figuring out whether the bigger box is really the better deal. In the car, ask how many minutes until you arrive if it's 4:40 now and the trip takes twenty-five. Cooking is the best of all, because doubling a recipe is fractions in disguise and nobody feels tested. When your eight-year-old figures out that half of three-quarters of a cup means measuring out three-eighths, that's real understanding, not a worksheet.
Keep it light. If it starts feeling like a quiz, the whole thing backfires. The goal is for numbers to feel like something the family does, not something the kid gets graded on.
Week 4: Get comfortable with being stuck
This is the hardest one for grown-ups, because our instinct is to rescue. A kid stares at a problem, gets frustrated, and we jump in with the answer to end the pain. It's loving. It's also a habit that teaches them frustration is an emergency instead of a normal part of learning.
Try naming the stuck feeling instead of fixing it. "This is the tricky part. That's supposed to feel hard." Then give them a small nudge, not the answer. "What do you already know here?" or "What's a smaller version of this problem?" Wait longer than feels comfortable. Ten seconds of silence feels like forever to a parent, but it's often exactly when the kid figures it out on their own.
And when they get something wrong, treat the mistake as information, not a verdict. "Okay, so that way didn't work. What did it tell us?" A wrong answer that a kid understands is worth more than a right answer they guessed.
What actually changes in 30 days
You won't see a test score jump in a month. That's not the point, and any tool that promises it is selling you busywork. What changes is smaller and more durable. Your kid stops flinching when a problem looks hard. They start saying "let me try" instead of "I can't." They stop announcing that they're bad at math, because they've stopped hearing it at home.
I've watched this shift in my own classroom over a single semester, and the kids it helps most are usually the ones who arrived convinced they had a math-shaped hole in their brain. They don't. They had a story about themselves, and the story came from somewhere.
