Reading Is a Math Skill: Kids Who Can Calculate but Can't Decode the Problem
The kid who could compute but not begin
I had a fourth grader named Marcus who could give me the times tables faster than I could ask. Clean, quick, no finger counting. Then I put a word problem in front of him: "Marcus has 8 bags of marbles with 7 marbles in each bag. How many marbles does he have?" He looked at it for a full minute and said, "I don't get it." He could have answered it in his sleep as 8 times 7. He just couldn't find the 8 times 7 hiding inside the sentence.
That gap shows up constantly. A child good at math but bad at word problems is not usually bad at math at all. The arithmetic is fine. What's missing is the reading step, the part where you turn a paragraph into numbers and an operation. That's a real skill, and it's separate from computing.
Why the sentence is the hard part
A bare problem like 8 x 7 asks a kid to do one thing: multiply. A word problem asks for four or five things before any math happens. Read it. Picture what's going on. Figure out what's being asked. Decide which numbers matter. Pick the operation. The multiplication is the last and easiest step.
So when a kid stalls, watch where they stall. If they can eventually set it up and then compute it correctly, the reading is the wall. That's the most common case I see. A few things make that wall taller:
- Long or wordy sentences that bury the actual question
- Numbers written as words ("three dozen") instead of digits
- Extra information that doesn't matter, dropped in on purpose
- Words like "each," "per," "left," and "in all" that quietly signal an operation
- Two-step problems where you have to hold a result and use it again
Notice that none of those are about arithmetic. They're about language and attention.
How to tell if it's reading or math
Try this at the kitchen table. Take a word problem your child is stuck on and read it out loud to them, slowly. Don't explain it. Just read it. If they suddenly say "oh" and solve it, the issue was decoding the text, not the math.
Then try the reverse. Pull the bare numbers out and ask them cold. If your kid can do 24 divided by 6 instantly but froze on "24 cookies shared among 6 friends," you've confirmed it. The math engine works. The reading interface is jammed.
I do this diagnostic before I do anything else, because the fix is completely different depending on the answer. Drilling more arithmetic won't help a reading problem. It just makes a kid feel worse about a subject they're actually good at.
Teach them to slow down and translate
The fix is to make the reading step visible and slow. Rushing is the enemy here. Kids who are fast at computation often try to be fast at word problems too, and they skim, grab the first two numbers they see, and pick an operation at random.
Here's the routine I teach, and it works for most kids by the end of a few weeks:
- Read the whole problem once, without touching a pencil.
- Read it again and underline the actual question. What is it asking for?
- Circle the numbers that matter, and cross out any that don't.
- Say out loud, in plain words, what needs to happen. "I need to put the groups together" or "I need to split this up."
- Only then write the number sentence and solve it.
The "say it out loud in plain words" step is the one that changes things. A kid who can explain "there are 6 rows and each row has 5 chairs, so I add 5 six times or multiply" has already done the hard part. The 30 is easy.
Practice the reading, not just the numbers
Because this is a reading skill, you practice it like reading. Give small doses often instead of a giant worksheet once. One good word problem a day, talked through together, beats twenty rushed and wrong.
A trick I like: have your child write their own word problems. Give them the number sentence, say 4 x 3, and ask them to invent a story that fits. "Four dogs each have three bones." Kids who can build a problem can take one apart, because they finally see how the sentence and the numbers connect. My marble kid, Marcus, got there this way. Once he'd written a dozen of his own, the ones on the test stopped looking like a foreign language.
Also read normally with your kid, plain books, every day. Comprehension is comprehension. A child who's used to holding several pieces of a story in their head at once has an easier time holding several pieces of a math problem in their head too. The two skills lean on each other more than most people expect.
One more thing, and it matters. Don't let a word-problem stumble convince your kid they're "bad at math." That story sticks, and it's wrong. A kid who can compute clean and just needs help decoding the sentence is in a great spot. You're not fixing their math. You're teaching them to read a specific, tricky kind of paragraph, and that's a skill any kid can build with a little patience and a pencil.
