Is a Math App Actually Helping My Struggling Kid, or Just Keeping Them Busy?
My son used a math app every single day for a month. Streak intact, badges piling up, a little animated fox cheering him on. His teacher sent home a quiz with a 58 on it. That gap, between the daily green checkmarks and the actual red pen, is the thing every parent of a struggling kid eventually runs into. The app says everything's fine. The report card says otherwise.
So the honest question is not whether math apps are good or bad. It's narrower than that. Do math apps help struggling students, or do they just keep them busy while the real gap stays exactly where it was? The answer depends almost entirely on how the app handles a kid who is behind, and most of them handle it badly.
Busy work looks exactly like progress
Here's the uncomfortable part. An app can generate an enormous amount of activity that means nothing.
A struggling kid will drift toward the problems they can already do, because those feel good and the app rewards them for it. If the app doesn't push back, your kid can spend twenty minutes a day reviewing addition they mastered a year ago, collecting rewards the whole time, and never touch the multiplication they're actually failing. The streak grows. The gap doesn't close.
I've built this kind of software, and I can tell you the metric an app shows a parent is almost never the metric that matters. "Minutes practiced" is not learning. "Problems completed" is not learning. Those numbers go up no matter what. What you want to know is whether the hard thing got easier, and most apps are strangely quiet about that.
The tell is what happens on a wrong answer
If you want one test for whether an app helps struggling learners, watch it react when your kid gets something wrong. That single moment separates the useful tools from the busy-work machines.
An app that's actually helping does something like this:
- Stops and shows why the answer was wrong, not just that it was wrong.
- Gives an easier version of the same idea before moving on.
- Comes back to that same skill later to check if it stuck.
- Adjusts the difficulty so the kid lives right at the edge of what they can do.
An app that's just keeping them busy does this:
- Flashes a red X.
- Maybe plays a sad sound.
- Serves the next problem immediately, same difficulty, no explanation.
- Never revisits the thing your kid didn't understand.
The second kind isn't teaching. It's testing, over and over, and testing a kid on something they don't know is just a slow way to confirm they don't know it.
Struggling kids need the difficulty to bend
A kid who's on grade level can survive a mediocre app. They already have the foundation, so even random practice reinforces something real. A struggling kid can't survive it. They need the app to meet them where they actually are, which is often a grade or two below where the app assumes.
Say your fourth grader is failing long division but is shaky on basic multiplication facts underneath it. A good app notices the shaky multiplication and backs up to fix that first, because you cannot do long division without it. A bad app keeps drilling long division problems your kid has no foundation for, and your kid keeps failing them, and the daily practice quietly teaches them that they're bad at math. That last outcome is worse than doing nothing.
So when you're deciding whether an app is helping, ask whether it can go backward. Can it drop below the current grade to patch a hole? If it only ever pushes forward, it's built for kids who are already fine, not for yours.
How to check in one week
You don't need a month to know. Give it a week and run a small experiment at home.
On day one, write down three specific problems your kid struggles with. Real ones. "Seven times eight." "Forty minus nineteen." "Half of twelve." Set the paper aside.
Let them use the app normally for a week. Then, on day seven, pull out that same paper and ask those three questions cold, no app, no hints. If even one of them is faster or more confident than it was on day one, the app is doing something. If all three land exactly where they started, the daily practice is busy work no matter how good the streak looks.
This works because it measures the only thing that counts. Not activity. Not engagement. Whether a hard thing got a little easier.
What actually moves a struggling kid
The apps that help struggling students share a plain quality. The rewards are tied to real progress, not to time spent or buttons tapped. When a kid earns something for pushing through a problem that used to stump them, the reward reinforces the effort that mattered. When a kid earns something just for showing up, the app is paying them to be occupied.
My son's daily-streak app was the second kind. We switched to one that backed up, patched the multiplication facts he was missing, and only handed out its rewards when he cleared something genuinely hard. It was less flashy. He complained for about three days. Then the next quiz came home with a 74 on it, and the one after that was better. Not because he spent more minutes. Because the minutes finally pointed at the thing he couldn't do.
