How I Vet Any Learning App Before It Touches My Kid's Tablet
The download button is the last thing I press
A friend texted me a link to a "free" spelling app her six-year-old loved. I spent about twenty minutes with it before I let my own kid near it. By the end I had deleted it and sent her a screenshot of why. It wasn't evil. It just wasn't what the store listing promised, and the store listing is where most parents stop looking.
I build a kids math app for my own family, so I know exactly what the people on the other side of that download button are thinking about. Some of them are thinking about your child learning. A lot of them are thinking about retention numbers and ad revenue. Figuring out which is which is not that hard once you know where to look. Here is how to vet learning apps for kids without a computer science degree.
Read the privacy label before anything else
Both app stores now force developers to fill out a data-collection label. On the iPhone it's the "App Privacy" section. On Android it's the "Data safety" card. Most people scroll right past it. I read it first, every time.
What I'm looking for is a mismatch between what the app does and what it collects. A flashcard app that wants your location, your contacts, and your advertising identifier is not a flashcard app. It's an ad-serving machine wearing a flashcard costume. A genuine learning tool for a seven-year-old needs almost nothing. It needs to save progress, and that's about it.
Here's my quick sort:
- Green light: collects nothing, or only "data not linked to you" for basic app function.
- Yellow light: collects usage data or identifiers. Worth understanding why before I trust it.
- Red light: collects location, contacts, or "data used to track you" in a kids app. Gone.
If the app is aimed at children under 13 in the US, it's supposed to follow COPPA, which sharply limits what can be collected without a parent's real consent. A red-light label on a kids app tells me the developer either doesn't care or is betting you won't check.
Play it myself, wrong on purpose
This is the step that catches the junk. I open the app and I play like a kid who doesn't know the answer. I tap the wrong choice on purpose. I get a problem wrong three times in a row. Then I watch what happens.
A good app slows down. It shows me why 6 x 7 is 42, maybe with groups I can count. It gives me an easier one to rebuild confidence, then works back up. A junk app does one of two things. It either flashes a sad noise and moves on with zero teaching, or it quietly makes everything easier so I "win" and keep tapping. Neither one is learning. The first is a quiz with no teacher. The second is a slot machine that happens to show numbers.
I also fail on purpose to see if the app is honest with the kid. If I get everything wrong and the app still throws a fullscreen party, that's a tell. Real progress and cheap dopamine are not the same thing, and kids figure out the difference faster than we give them credit for.
Count the taps between the kid and the actual point
Time how long it takes to get from opening the app to doing one real problem. I count taps. My rule is loose but useful: if a five-year-old has to get through more than two or three screens before they're actually practicing, the design is fighting the goal.
Watch for the stuff that lives in between. A spinning prize wheel every ninety seconds. A cartoon store where you spend coins on hats. A "watch this ad to keep your streak" prompt. None of that is inherently bad, but when there's more of it than there is math, the app is built to keep the kid on the screen, not to get the kid off the screen having learned something. Those are opposite business models, and you can feel which one you're holding within five minutes.
Look for the exits, not just the entrances
Two things I always check before I trust an app on my kid's tablet.
First, how do you pay, and can a kid trigger it? I try to find the in-app purchase flow. If I can get to a "buy 5,000 gems for $19.99" screen with a couple of taps and no password gate, my kid can too, by accident, in about four seconds. A well-built kids app puts a real barrier there, usually a parent gate that asks you to do something a young child can't, like a multiplication problem or a hold-to-confirm.
Second, is there any way for me to see what my kid actually did? A parent view, even a basic one, tells me the developer expects a parent to be involved. No parent view at all usually means the app was designed to be handed over and forgotten, which is exactly the arrangement I'm trying to avoid.
What actually earns a spot
After all this, most apps get deleted. The ones that stay share a pattern. They teach when the kid is wrong. They respect the kid's time instead of farming it. They tie any reward to real progress instead of raw minutes, which is the whole reason I ended up building our own thing, Math Prizes, the way I did. And they treat the parent like a person who's allowed to see under the hood.
The spelling app my friend sent had a five-star average and a friendly mascot. It also wanted her daughter's advertising ID and showed a video ad every three words. Five stars means a lot of people clicked five stars. It doesn't mean anyone read the privacy label. You're allowed to be the one who does.
